Across artificial intelligence and machine systems, biology and microbial life, scent and atmospheric chemistry, robotics, sensors, and materials, the studio asks what counts as intelligence and how bodies, organisms, machines, and environments shape one another. The artist describes the studio as an ecosystem rather than a workshop, one node among collaborators, machines, and materials, all shaping each other. We are seeking a STEM Researcher &amp; Producer who can carry that inquiry forward and connect it to the wider worlds of science and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>The role<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>You are the artist&#8217;s scientific and technical thought partner and the studio&#8217;s bridge into the broader research and technology landscape. The work spans many disciplines (AI, biology, chemistry, robotics, sensing, materials, perfumery, cuisine, luxury product design), and this role exists to push that inquiry, conceptually and practically, while opening doors to the people, labs, and companies who can help realize it. You are fluent enough across STEM to scope what is possible, philosophically-minded enough to be a real creative interlocutor, and maintain a strong network of viable collaborators to assemble the right specialists for any given project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>What you&#8217;ll do<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a><strong>Scientific &amp; technical thought partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Partner with the artist in early creative research, ideation, and discovery; propose scientific and technical approaches across disciplines and iterate on them as a genuine creative interlocutor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Through rigorous research, stay at the frontier across relevant fields: machine learning and AI, microbiology, chemistry, physics, robotics, and emerging materials, along with the questions they raise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maintain a living view of emerging tools, research, and techniques; help create roadmaps, manuals, connect different systems between disciplines; brief the artist on what is newly possible and what it might mean for the work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Consulting on existing projects &amp; developing new ones<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The role works in both directions, deepening work already underway and originating what comes next.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Serve as the standing technical consultant on active projects: diagnose problems, advise on feasibility and method, and steer in-progress works toward what is achievable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review the existing body of work and its technical underpinnings, identifying where systems can be improved, extended, or made more robust.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Originate and develop new projects from the earliest concept, researching possibilities, prototyping, and shaping the technical premise alongside the artist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build a forward pipeline of ideas, materials, and methods the studio could pursue, and make the case for which are worth committing to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Network &amp; brokering<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leverage and grow professional relationships across science and technology, including: scientists, engineers, programmers, research labs, universities, companies, studios, and independent specialists, to source the right talent and tools for each project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull in outside expertise across disciplines as projects demand, providing direct guidance where you can and assembling specialists where you can&#8217;t.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify and broker partnerships, collaborations, and access to platforms, instruments, models, and proprietary tools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Public &amp; written voice<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Help write and shape the artist&#8217;s talks and lectures, sharpening the scientific and conceptual arguments behind the work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engage with press, preparing background, fielding technical questions, and helping frame how the work is described to journalists and the public.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refine and format language in materials that represent the studio, including catalogue essays, exhibition descriptions, wall texts, and project statements, ensuring technical ideas are accurate and clearly expressed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Technical direction &amp; stewardship<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spec and scope the technical components of works, and oversee their development whether built in-house or by external partners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Translate the artist&#8217;s intent into technical briefs, and translate technical constraints back into options the artist can choose between.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Define long-term care, prototyping, and obsolescence strategies, and build documentation so works can be reinstalled, recalibrated, and migrated as tools and platforms change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Qualifications<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5 years of experience working fluency across multiple technical fields rooted in scientific inquiry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>STEM training and experience enough to scope, evaluate, and direct work without necessarily building every piece of it yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A strong professional network across science and technology, and a track record of assembling specialists and brokering access to tools, talent, and platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consulting or technical-advisory experience: comfortable being the person a non-technical leader turns to for a clear, honest read on what is feasible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genuine breadth, with the judgment to know which expert to bring in when, and which problems to take on directly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At home at the boundary of finished science and open-ended experimentation, where outcomes are unpredictable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A strong communicator who can bridge artistic and technical languages, with a collaborative, well-connected temperament.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>How this role works alongside the Studio&#8217;s operations lead<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>This position is one of two peer roles reporting to the artist. You own scientific and technical direction, partnerships, and the studio&#8217;s connection to the wider research and technology landscape; the Studio Manager owns logistics, finance, and art-world relationships. On shared work (production, exhibitions, budgets, and conservation), you lead the technical track and the two of you coordinate closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Information:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a part-time position within a highly collaborative team. Anticipate a commitment of 20-25 hours\/week, with the potential for full-time. The workplace is hybrid. Mondays and Fridays are remote. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are onsite. Working hours are 10am-6pm. Occasional attendance of related opening receptions or events is welcomed but not required.
