Position summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Institute of Play, seeks a motivated, youth<\/strong>\u2010<\/strong>oriented, design and technology<\/strong>\u2010<\/strong>savvy <\/strong>individual to teach in its afterschool program, Short Circuit. Short Circuit is an enrichment <\/strong>program developed by the Institute of Play for Quest to Learn, the innovative new game-based, <\/strong>public school it founded in 2009. Short Circuit extends into the afterschool space the <\/strong>school\u2019s focus on tinkering, problem solving, collaboration and invention.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Program Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Short Circuit provides a studio-like learning environment where kids explore and experiment <\/strong>in digital and analog areas working with everything from papers to pixels. During Short <\/strong>Circuit, students are given the chance to build expertise in a range of design, media and <\/strong>technology skills\u2014 programming, soft circuits, web development, media production, and <\/strong>more. The program is partially funded by the Gates Foundation as a pilot site for youth-led <\/strong>programs centered on creativity and innovation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both The Institute of Play and Quest to Learn are located in New York City, near Chelsea.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Position Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a Short Circuit Mentor, the successful candidate is enthusiastic, committed to working <\/strong>with youth within a design, media, and technology<\/strong>\u2010<\/strong>led space, open to new ideas, adept at <\/strong>engaging diverse audiences, and able to foster and inspire broad participation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Specific skills required<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Experience teaching and working with middle school students<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Enthusiasm about technology, design and media platforms, and their integration into the<\/strong><\/p>\n

design process<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Fluent in digital design, media tools and platforms, and willing to learn more as required<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Flexible and able to solve problems creatively and effectively<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Positive attitude with strong collaboration skills<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Team player: responsible, independent and willing to pitch<\/strong>\u2010<\/strong>in where needed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Program Details<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Start date: Monday, January 3, 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Part Time: Monday-Friday, 2p-6pm, with an on<\/strong>\u2010<\/strong>site commitment of 20 hours per week<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Salary: Commensurate with experience<\/strong><\/p>\n
