We love real time data, finding interesting ways to aggregate\u00a0social networking statistics and have access to fascinating internet\u00a0research data from all over the world; this is the stuff that you could be\u00a0knee deep in!<\/p>\n<p>The developers will work closely with a growing team of developers,\u00a0researchers and staff on all phases of the application development cycle,\u00a0including planning, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>The Berkman Center for Internet &amp; Society is a research center founded to\u00a0explore cyberspace, share in its study, and help pioneer its development. We\u00a0represent a network of faculty, students, fellows, entrepreneurs, lawyers,\u00a0and virtual architects working to identify and engage with the challenges\u00a0and opportunities of cyberspace, and work with researchers, computer\u00a0scientists, activists, librarians, musicians, and more from all corners of\u00a0the university and beyond. Some\u00a0combination of education and experience is required, such as BS in computer\u00a0science or engineering, prior work experience, internships, Google Summer of\u00a0Code or personal code that has experienced load by a human.<br \/>\n* Experience with Ruby, Rails, PHP. Perl, Javascript, CSS, and HTML is\u00a0valued, but all are not essential.  Interest in learning these and more is\u00a0required; we are ready to invest in, teach and support the right person in\u00a0gaining the necessary skills.<br \/>\n* Ever write a tool to transform realtime data?  Written Javascript code\u00a0to\u00a0modify a page according to explicit and implicit user behavior? Have a\u00a0desire to contribute a jQuery library or ruby gem to handle\u00a0twitter\/facebook\/google data to the open source community?  We work with all\u00a0kinds of data, so having an open and creative take on modelling is a plus.<\/p>\n<p>*What we build:*<br \/>\nFor our web applications, we use Ruby on Rails, Perl or PHP in combination\u00a0with jQuery (we also maintain a few Java applications). Mysql, Postgres and\u00a0Couch provide the backend, but we&#8217;re open minded about new technology,\u00a0too.   We deploy via passenger, mod_perl and mod_jk on apache, use\u00a0Lucene\/Solr for search, and tomcat for our Java applications. We maintain\u00a0many production applications on primarily open source infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>*How we operate and expect you to participate:*<br \/>\n* We&#8217;ll ask you for your opinion and expect you to have one.<br \/>\n* That coding is your lifestyle; you have and admire your ability to pick\u00a0up\u00a0new technologies in days and weeks not months and years.<br \/>\n* We&#8217;ll have you create software with the languages and tools that best\u00a0match the job.<br \/>\n* That you will be able to refactor and improve existing applications, and\u00a0build new ones from scratch.<br \/>\n* We&#8217;ve got great sysadmin support but if you&#8217;ve got the skills, expect\u00a0to\u00a0use them.<br \/>\n*At the Berkman Center, geekery is respected. Our team lives in the Geek Cave&#8230; oddly enough, one of the\u00a0best-lit rooms at the Center!<\/p>\n<p>Berkman is a fast-paced academic environment, and developers need to be\u00a0adaptable, flexible and persistent, with the ability to manage multiple\u00a0tasks and communicate effectively about timelines and development\u00a0priorities. It requires a person  able to successfully maintain a complex\u00a0suite of web applications for high uptime, performance, and reliability.
