Located=<br \/>\n in the Discovery District of downtown Toronto and at the centre of the city=<br \/>\n&#8216;s dynamic cultural activities, OCAD has 3500 students and over three hundre=<br \/>\nd faculty members. Committed to excellence and contemporary approaches to ed=<br \/>\nucation. OCAD currently offers 12 programs leading to the BFA and BDes, and =<br \/>\nthree programs leading to Master&#8217;s degrees. It is building new interdiscipli=<br \/>\nnary programs. The university has experienced remarkable growth over the pas=<br \/>\nt five years and requires outstanding creative researchers\/practitioners and=<br \/>\n gifted teachers to join OCAD in an exciting period of institutional develop=<br \/>\nment and opportunity.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Drawing on faculty from acros=<br \/>\ns the university and working in collaboration with a broad range of Canadian=<br \/>\n and international private sector and public sector partners, the Digital Fu=<br \/>\ntures Initiative (DFI) is a set of new cross-disciplinary programs, research=<br \/>\n, and innovation activities currently being developed at OCAD. Minors, a maj=<br \/>\nor and a suite of graduate programs will provide learning opportunities in d=<br \/>\nigital art, media and design, linking this knowledge to emerging technologie=<br \/>\ns with applications in fields such as art\/design and science, sustainability=<br \/>\n, health and wellness, accessibility, diversity, and global innovation and b=<br \/>\nusiness development. OCAD has launched a research program in many fields of =<br \/>\ndigital endeavour and related disciplines, and has recently secured signific=<br \/>\nant funding to begin the construction of a series of dedicated research labo=<br \/>\nratories. Faculty cross-appointed in the DFI will be engaged in all facets o=<br \/>\nf planning and utilization of these laboratories.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>T=<br \/>\nhe DFI Program Development and Selection Committee, comprising representativ=<br \/>\nes from the Faculties of Art, Design, and Liberal Studies, invites applicati=<br \/>\nons for the following six tenure-track positions:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>1=<br \/>\n)ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND PROGRAM CHAIR FOR THE DIGITAL FUTURES INITIATIVE<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Program Chair for the DFI is responsible for lead=<br \/>\ning the development and implementation of undergraduate and graduate program=<br \/>\ns within the cross-disciplinary Digital Futures Initiative Program. He\/she m=<br \/>\nust be able to build a program comprised of faculty artists, designers, soci=<br \/>\nal scientists, humanists, computer scientists, and engineers. She\/he will ne=<br \/>\ned to facilitate and build relationships with other institutions and private=<br \/>\n entities. They will have a history of working in collaborative partnerships=<br \/>\n with other institutions or sectors. Building on existing faculty expertise =<br \/>\nand curriculum, as well as incoming faculty the successful candidate will ov=<br \/>\nersee the development of new courses and programs, and foster increased rese=<br \/>\narch capacity in digital media, art and design and related interdisciplinary=<br \/>\n fields.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Candidates for Program Chair will hold a d=<br \/>\noctoral degree and have a strong background in interdisciplinary program dev=<br \/>\nelopment and research. Candidates will have expertise in two or more the fol=<br \/>\nlowing areas: computer science, computer engineering, cognitive science, phy=<br \/>\nsical computing, human\/computer interaction (HCI), artificial intelligence, =<br \/>\napplied physics, interactive media, Web art, game development, digital imagi=<br \/>\nng, visualisation, media theory, or closely related fields. They will have e=<br \/>\nxperience collaborating with artists and designers, a strong research agenda=<br \/>\n, a track record of successful research and industry collaborations, and a s=<br \/>\nignificant record of supervising graduate students.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>This position may start as early as Spring 2009, subject to availability of=<br \/>\n the successful candidate.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>2)ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, I=<br \/>\nNNOVATION AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: DIGITAL MEDIA, ART AND DESIGN<\/div>\n<div>=<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<div>Holding an MBA or PhD in Economics, Management, Communication=<br \/>\n or Technology, candidates will bring expertise in innovation practice and s=<br \/>\ntudies, small and large business development and market analysis with a focu=<br \/>\ns on digital practices within the creative industries and\/or cultural entrep=<br \/>\nreneurship. Their expertise may include knowledge transfer, commercializatio=<br \/>\nn or technology transfer. They will bring an understanding of the global eco=<br \/>\nnomy, including Canadian and emerging markets. They will have demonstrated c=<br \/>\napacity to work within a highly interdisciplinary setting, as well as practi=<br \/>\ncal experience in working with emerging or existing businesses within the di=<br \/>\ngital sector. Experience teaching at the graduate level and supervising grad=<br \/>\nuate students is preferred. .<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>3)ASSISTANT OR ASSOCI=<br \/>\nATE PROFESSOR, GRAPHICS, ANIMATION AND VISUALIZATION<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Applicants will bring knowledge from the general area of Computer Graphics=<br \/>\n with applications to animation and\/or interactive\/3-D systems. They will ha=<br \/>\nve a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, New Media Studies or a=<br \/>\n closely related area, with additional experience or training in creative ap=<br \/>\nplications of computer science in the field of graphics. Candidates will hav=<br \/>\ne expertise in computer graphic techniques, specifically in animation techni=<br \/>\nques, and may have expertise in virtual reality, 3-D games, advanced visuali=<br \/>\nzation, augmented reality, or and\/or mobile\/locative media platforms and sys=<br \/>\ntems. They will be versed in the history of animation\/visualization and the =<br \/>\ncurrent debates about animation\/visualization practices and aesthetics. They=<br \/>\n may have experience in artificial intelligence and intelligent systems desi=<br \/>\ngn.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>4)ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, GAME DESIGN=\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Applicants will bring a general expertise in games=<br \/>\n design or development across multiple platforms, including mobile, on-line,=<br \/>\n platform, serious games and extended reality gaming, with a concentration i=<br \/>\nn one of these fields. They will have a strong history of creative practice =<br \/>\nand\/or knowledge in gaming and will also be capable of contributing to schol=<br \/>\narship in the history, theory, aesthetics and genre criticism in computer ga=<br \/>\nmes, preferably within an international context. Holding a Ph.D. in Interact=<br \/>\nive Media, Computer Science or other related field and bringing a minimum of=<br \/>\n 4 years&#8217; professional experience, they will be capable of curriculum develo=<br \/>\npment in computer games and of teaching games development approaches to arti=<br \/>\nsts as well as designers at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They will=<br \/>\n be interested in exploring research in contemporary and future applications=<br \/>\n of games across multiple contexts, including art as well as design, and are=<br \/>\n expected to be engaged at an international level.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>=<br \/>\n5)ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, WEARABLE\/MOBILE TECHNOLOGY AND INTERFACE=<br \/>\nS<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Applicants will bring both research and practical=<br \/>\n expertise in the creation of wearable technologies and interfaces such as a=<br \/>\npparel or jewellery. They will combine technical and creative skills with kn=<br \/>\nowledge of materials and engineering. Candidates may approach wearable techn=<br \/>\nologies from various perspectives. This position will work closely with OCAD=<br \/>\n&#8216;s Mobile Experience Laboratory and mobile research area as well as its prog=<br \/>\nrams in integrated media, textiles and jewellery. It is preferable that the =<br \/>\nsuccessful candidate hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science or Engineering with st=<br \/>\nrong design or wearable art or mobile interface practice. Exceptional candid=<br \/>\nates with an MFA or Master&#8217;s of Design in fashion and supplementary studies =<br \/>\nin engineering will be considered. Applicants will bring capacity in wearabl=<br \/>\ne systems creation, fashion and technology\/engineering, and the ability to b=<br \/>\nuild physical interfaces to virtual systems.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>6)ASSI=<br \/>\nSTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, HUMAN\/COMPUTER INTERACTION AND TANGIBLE INTERF=<br \/>\nACES<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Applicants will bring experience in Human\/Comp=<br \/>\nuter Interaction (HCI) with a focus on tangible interfaces or ethnography. I=<br \/>\nt is preferable that the successful candidate hold a Ph.D. in cognitive scie=<br \/>\nnce or computer science with an additional field in the humanities, social s=<br \/>\nciences or design. This position will work closely with OCAD&#8217;s studio-based =<br \/>\nprograms on implementing tangible interfaces. Exceptional candidates with a =<br \/>\nMaster&#8217;s in Fine Arts or Design and Engineering will be considered. They wil=<br \/>\nl have a significant record of supervising graduate students, be familiar wi=<br \/>\nth the interdisciplinary scholarship that encompasses HCI and have a history=<br \/>\n of collaboration with designers or artists. A successful track-record in re=<br \/>\nsearch and industry collaborations is expected.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>ALL=<br \/>\n POSITIONS<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The successful candidates will:<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<div>=B7Assume a key role in building the interdisciplinary Digi=<br \/>\ntal Futures Initiative, contributing to teaching and program development at =<br \/>\nthe undergraduate and graduate levels;<\/div>\n<div>=B7be expected to develop s=<br \/>\ntrong, externally funded research programs and engage with cross-disciplinar=<br \/>\ny research teams;<\/div>\n<div>=B7be expected to participate in Faculty and uni=<br \/>\nversity-wide governance systems, as well as other activities that contribute=<br \/>\n to the academic life of OCAD.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Unless otherwise not=<br \/>\ned, these positions are to commence with the 2009\/10 academic year and are s=<br \/>\nubject to budgetary approval. In light of the specialized nature of some of =<br \/>\nthe positions, OCAD is open to considering secondments.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>=<\/p>\n<div>Candidates are expected to hold a doctoral degree or be close to comple=<br \/>\ntion. In some positions a degree at the master&#8217;s level combined with excepti=<br \/>\nonal industry experience and credentials will be considered.
