James Atlas is the author of five books, including two biographies (DELMORE SCHWARTZ: THE LIFE OF AN AMERICAN POET and BELLOW: A BIOGRAPHY); a novel, THE GREAT PRETENDER, and a collection of essays, MY LIFE IN THE MIDDLE AGES: A SURVIVOR'S TALE. He has worked as a staff writer and editor at The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and The Atlantic, and is the founding editor of the Penguin Lives series of brief biographies.
