Space Between

Kinetic sculptures that invite users to explore a space between people, mediated by mechanisms.

1: Using metaphors of sound and communication waves, this object requires two people simultaneously turning hand cranks that animate sine wave motions. Depending on how the cranks are turned, wooden sticks move in and out of sync, amplifying rhythmic patterns of balance and interference.

2: A series of 5 self contained, wooden gear systems are manually operated by individual hand cranks. Users move around the piece choosing to either operate the gear systems from one side or observe them in motion on the other. Gears, inherently rigid and exact, take on an organic, poetic, and narrative quality in this piece.
