Suspend and Expand

Michael Rosen

Suspend and Expand is an interactive surround sound installation that attempts to create simple connections to the complexity of our sound world.

Suspend and Expand is an interactive multichannel sound installation. Using the Kinect’s unique 3D scanning technology, the installation invites users to intuitively interact with multichannel and virtual 3D sound environments. With a simple tilt or turn of the head, users can move sounds horizontally and vertically throughout a room installed with 8 speakers. The roar of an airplane slowly morphs into the buzz of a bee as the natural sonic environment constantly shifts. Suspend and Expand features personal 3D sound recordings taken from around the NYU area, and aims to achieve a subtle and effective interaction.
