Data Scarves

Chrisanthy Surya

My thesis is a fanciful experiment in which I extracted data from well-known paintings, generated new patterns and printed them onto silk scarves. Will a hint of the original remain? Will it be aesthetically pleasing? I wanted to find out.

Description

I created the image in Processing by extracting pixel data from one painting and combining them with those from another. For example, when I I wanted to focus on colors, I kept the outline of Vermeer’s Girl with A Pearl Earring and transplant all the color date from Van Gogh’s Starry Night. I took the resulting generated image and arranged it on to a 20″x20″ document. I sent the finished design to be printed on silk. The scarf is an original with a very cultured history and mystery.
