The Good Citizen

Daniel Melancon

The Good Citizen is a set of networked consumer devices that monitor innocuous daily habits and explore the ways in which the citizen can be analyzed and objectified through aggregated data.

Description

Networked household devices promise to improve their user's lives by providing insights through targeted data monitoring, opening the floodgates for governments and corporations to mine this data. The Good Citizen is a possible logical extreme in the age of mass data collection.

In this speculative scenario, a suite of connected consumer devices/surveillance objects collect usage data to determine the productivity, emotional stability, and health of the user. The Good Citizen continuously performs undisclosed analysis to draw conclusions about the user with little regard to context and contradictory inputs. A simple wearable device and phone app alert the user to their standing as a citizen in real-time.
