Resistant Ego

Xinyi Deng

Resistant Ego is an interactive installation which explores the tension between the inner world of myself and the outside world-reality and how this tension shapes my personality.

Description

Nine masks hang on the wall, each with a different dynamic pattern projected on. Eight out of the nine patterns represent eight different types of defense mechanisms, while the one in the middle represents reality. Users are immersed in a dynamic process of changing masks that are generated based on certain algorithm behind the eight types of defense mechanism.

Defense mechanism is a coping technique that reduces anxiety arising from unacceptable or potentially harmful impulses. The main concern about this project is how my ego is mediated between identification and reality.
