Shyoot

Martin Romero

Paper plant sculptures that express the intricacies of shyness as a natural part of the world.

Description

Sensitive. Shy. Touch-me-not. These are some of the names of mimosa pudica, a plant that closes upon darkness and opens with light. It is also reactive to stimuli such as wind and touch. This inspired my thesis.

The plant-like sculpture animates the experience of shyness by reacting to a stimulus of proximity. It moves upon detection of any nearby presence without physical contact. Its petals are made from paper with muscle wires sewed on to them. When the muscle wires are heated or current is run through, they contract thus, pull the paper and achieve a floating-like motion similar to that of plants.

I aim to express personal experience in social interactions and possibly communicate how at times it can be overwhelming for others and myself.
