Unstructured Search – A Machine Learning Photobook

Abigail Muí±oz

For my thesis project, I created an ML(machine learning)-generated photobook in collaboration with Professor Editha Mesina, undergraduate students from her studio portraiture class at NYU Tisch Photography and Imaging, and other emerging photographers. The book was designed in partnership with graphic designer An Vo.

Description

I want this project to be a physical memory. A way to collect portraits and images that were made by people and made by machines in 2020.

The ML-generated photobook I created for my thesis project combines traditional portraiture photography and machine learning images. The work is titled Unstructured Search because it is the unpredictable nature of early photography and the unpredictable nature of machine learning that intrigues me.

Creating a photo book was important I wanted to take the digital and make it analog again. I wanted to take a closer look at these unpredictable machine learning images. Machine learning images can easily be produced in great quantities but can also be lost in digital space and digital storage. And although we're creating so many of these images, we often don't take the time to look at them closely, individually.
