New Interfaces for Musical Expression

The Magnetotron is a musical instrument made from a horizontal rotating cylinder that has strips of audio cassette taped adhered to it in strips, and is played with tape heads mounted on the fingers of the user. In some ways it's a cross between a Glass Armonica and a Mellotron, but can also be viewed as a sophisticated tape player that's been flipped inside out. Variation in finger movement can cause expression in vibrato, phasing, and DJ effects like scratching, while maintaining the status of a tonal instrument.
