The Force

You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.

Introduction to Physical Computing

The curiosity of flight never leaves us spiritless. Especially when flight is defined in its ethereal sense i.e. without the use of propellers or jets. Yoda lifted the X-Wing out of the swamp using only what is otherwise called 'The Force'. We wanted to explore the feeling of using the Force in the real world and so we prototyped a magnetic levitator that can be controlled by a Kinect sensor.

After all, what seems to be magic might just be magnetic!

Audience
Star Wars fans and people who love the idea of ethereal flight.

User Scenario
A user comes near the setup and stretches out his/her hand after looking at the directions on the poster. The system recognizes the gesture and the music plays indicating that the user is using the force. The stretched hand is then tracked to move the levitating miniature model of X-Wings.

Implementation
A false floor below which a magnetic levitation base rests on an Arduino controlled wheelbase. The control instructions are driven by a Kinect sensor.
