We balance

We balance is a multiplayer game using body balance by deploying the Wii balance board as a game controller.

Classes
Procedural Design in Abstract Gameplay

WE:BALANCE is a multiplayer game that requires people some sense of balance, cooperative attitude, and competing spirit. As the game implements Nintendo's Wii Balance Board as controllers, players will step on their balance board and try to move their weight to control the game characters.

Theme of the game is basically based on the ingenious animation "Balance(?)(year)." Players are on tilting floor, and need to keep balance to survive, or not to let others fall off, or just to keep the good balance of their own world.

The game mechanism is simple, but it does tell story with elaborating level structure. The first level is just an empty plane that tilts. As the level goes further, it starts to represent some environment we face everyday like home, office, and the entire city, thus makes players to feel engaged into their real life as a stage while playing the game together.

As the level goes further, however, it starts to represent some environments we face everyday; like home, office, and the entire city, thus makes players to feel engaged into their real life as a stage while playing the game together.

Background
Research on indie game design, Game mechanics.

How to make the game more interactive and cooperative, not addictive.

Audience
People invited to ITP winter show 2013

User Scenario
People will come to our space and find 4 Wii balance board on the floor with big screen projected onto the wall. When an user stands on a Wii balance board, the character will be activated by changing it color as well as activating wii balance board simulation on the screen. Once all 4 users stand on the each board, the game start in a few seconds.

In first stage, players just need to try stay on the board on the game ( not wii balance board)

In second stage, we will encourage players to hold hands with others to add another interaction between people. By asking people to hold hands, players is not only need to balance themselves, but also balance with others.

Implementation
This game created in Unity Game Engine and 4 Wii balance board. We've had a user test on Eyebeam to make a better game experience.

Conclusion
I've got interested in game design from last year and want to develop the game that could bridge a virtual life and real life. Developing a game was not an easy task, but it it definitely worth to try because we could learn game mechanics to make fun game as well as delivering a story at the same time.
