The shadows of plants are dancing in the wind.

Siyuan Zan

light experience of dancing plant shadows
https://youtu.be/SnFboZt_c9E

Description

I inspired by the reflection of plants reflected on the curtains on a bright afternoon. They are swaying with the wind according to the wind speed which seem to be swaying with the melody. The color of the reflection will change according to the plant itself and the light. So for this light installation,I try to use weather data to create a light and shadow experience that the shadows of plants are dancing in the wind.
I will use the real-time wind data in the weather station to drive the gear motor to control the speed and direction of the motor. At the same time, I use led rings as the light source, and simulate the visual effect of the swaying and dancing of the plants through the rotation and distortion of the special shape of the diffusive material.

Description

ITP Weather Band is an experimental band creating music, interactive objects, and visuals with weather data collected from a DIY weather station. We built a DIY weather station system and created experimental instruments that turn the environmental data into music and visuals. We explore new ways of delivering information and stories about our immediate environment through the auditory and visual sense. We’re growing into an open source project.

The band consists of faculties, alums, and graduate students at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (NYU ITP) and beyond. We started the weather station project in 2019 as a sub-group of ITPower and launched the band in January 2020.

See here for the details and full credits https://github.com/ITPNYU/weather-band.

We had a special collaborator, Yichan Wang (https://yichanwang.me/) pursuing her MFA in Design and Technology at Parsons School of Design, for the weather band website.

At the winter show 2020, we're introducing:

* ITP Weather Station System by ITP Weather Band
A DIY weather station system that posts data to the web to be accessed from anywhere in the world for creative projects.

* Weather Data Visualization Interfaces by Yiting Liu, Atchareeya Name Jattuporn, and Cy Kim
On this website, you get to see the visualization of all the data or select a specific part of data based on dates, id numbers, and categories.

* Weather Band Website by Yichan Wang (New School, visual system design) and Schuyler W DeVos (development).
A visual system and website with a graphical weather mobile that sensitively reacts to the real-time weather data.

* Weather Instruments made by the band members, including

A project that you can see a whale at a rate of 2.5% by combining natural force and human force gently.

Another project is making the sound using the gust data from ITP New York weather station.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ikAnjM0UHw&t=31s

Description

This is a wind sculpture with moire effect. I design a moire effect that when 2 pieces are at the right angle, a whale tail shape would appear in its moire effect. I made one side of the sculpture driven by wind and another side driven by human beings. People could only see the whale moire effect at a rate of 2.5%. The miracle of life is even in a smaller percentage. People would try to rotate the sculpture to chase after the whale tail shape. But when people are too close to the sculpture, they would not see the whale clearly. The whale could only be seen at a distance when wind and gravity are fine. I want to use this sculpture to show the rareness of the appearance of a living creature.

The gust sound installation is creating an ambient and long sound that is using the gust data. It is part of the projects for ITP weather band club. It starts when I stepped onto an old pavilion in the yard, the pavilion would shake all the materials. There are 2 metal pieces I put as waste material and suddenly I discover the sound is actually very intriguing. So I start to make a weather instrument with it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqevrx9pFSo

Description

This project gets the field recording based on the location of the International Space Station's longitude and altitude and the altitude, distance, and zenith angle of the sun when there is no person engaging. When there are people in the environment recognized by the webcam, the distortion of the field recording will be more vibrant, creating a symphony between humans and nature.
