A New Civics for Smart Cities
All over the world, new digital technologies are being harnessed to address timeless urban problems such as crime, traffic and waste disposal. While big technology companies envision an efficient urban future of “smart cities”, a new cadre of civic hackers are taking up open source technologies and building a messier, more sociable set of applications for citizens. How will the tension between these two movements shape the city and the future of computing? This talk will highlight some of the big historical forces at work, and outline thirteen principles for design and policy in smart cities.
Dr. Anthony Townsend is Research Director at the Institute for the Future and Senior Research Fellow at New York University’s Rudin Center for Transportation. His first book, Smart Cities: Big Data, Civic Hackers and the Quest for A New Utopia is published by W.W. Norton & Co.
