Abstract

I suffered great changes in my life over the past few years. Having lost much that was important to me, I began to contemplate life introspectively. I'm not religious, and I don't have something to pray for every time I feel lost and stuck. Sometimes I'm just genuinely curious, is there truly something called fate? Then, when I'm suffering, it doesn't necessarily mean I did something wrong. 'Fate' sometimes can be a vent or excuse for me to escape. For my thesis, I decided to delve deeper into the concept of 'Fate'. This website showcases those explorations.

I interviewed people and transformed their thoughts about 'Fate' into an interactive website to showcase different opinions on this topic.

Research/Context

Based on my personal experiences, I have become increasingly curious about how people's opinions on 'fate' are shaped by their backgrounds and experiences. Therefore, my primary research involved conducting a survey. In this survey, I asked approximately 40 people a range of general and detailed questions. I aimed to explore the potential connections or randomness between people's opinions on fate and factors such as their religious beliefs, significant life changes, or age.

In addition to this, I conducted research on Chinese traditional fortune-telling, which is related to my cultural background. In my opinion, the way a culture practices fortune-telling reflects their perspective on fate and, more broadly, their understanding of the essence of the world. Inspired by yin yang philosophy, I decided to incorporate the ba gua as a primary visual element for my website. This choice conveys a sense of reincarnation, which aligns with my views on 'Fate'.
