A virtual reality installation-performance immersing the viewer in everyday censorship, providing a glimpse into the realities it distorts, identities it mis-shapes, and lives it destroys.

Abstract
".... .." is a narrated non-interactive virtual reality installation performance, immersing the visitor in everyday extreme censorship. The experience welcomes you into a world where reality is distorted, and truth is elusive — a reflection of the lived experiences of many in Iran for the past 45 years.

Technical Details
The central theme of “.... ..” is the concept of "absence of presence," a notion that permeates this virtual reality installation performance, guiding visitors through a series of steps that progressively highlight the consequences of pervasive censorship. The experience unfolds as follows:
1. The entrance/spatial narrative: Prior to arrival, visitors receive an email instructing them to knock ".... .." in Morse code rhythm for entry. Upon arrival, they are welcomed into a virtual "home" environment where they are introduced to two friends. As visitors don Oculus Quest 3 headsets and headphones, I depart to "make tea," my physical presence gradually fading from view.
2. The virtual reality: Visitors find themselves immersed in a 360-degree modern apartment, with lighting directing their focus to key narrative elements. As the non-interactive experience unfolds, my narration shares real stories of censorship in Iran. Audio distortion and dimming lights underscore the sense of helplessness, culminating in absolute darkness as visitors are left to grapple with the aftermath of censorship's grip.
3. Connection of virtual and physical reality: A vertical block symbolizes the divide between virtual and physical realms, while projected eyes serve as a reminder of the pervasive fear induced by censorship. Upon removing their headsets, visitors are invited to the "kitchen" for tea, marking the final absence of my presence.
4. Reflection: A landing page offers visitors a chance to reflect on their experience, with artifacts from the narrative prompting contemplation and conversation. The blend of virtual and physical spaces encourages visitors to consider the impact of censorship on perception and society.
“.... ..” seamlessly integrates virtual and physical realities, employing narrative and spatial elements to provoke thought and evoke emotion. The environment is crafted in Unreal Engine, with audio effects enhancing immersion, and spatial installations reinforcing the thematic exploration of censorship.
Research/Context
Drawing from a personal narrative, my research included studying Iranian artists working within similar realms and issues, conducting interviews with friends and family members who shared memories from the same era of 1990s in Iran, and conducting studies through watching movies, reading books, and attending exhibition.
