Creating the “cabinets of curiosity” was a team effort, where there was a lot of emphasis on effort! Only because there were multiple ideas that were floating around and no one would pin down a single one. It felt like we were going to present a series of ideas and possibilities instead of having a physical representation of an idea.
When reviewing all of the ideas, it circled around getting people interested in the voting process that way they would vote. How do you get visitors to put effort into voting and making thoughtful decisions when a) they are tourists b)come once a year on a field trip c) New Yorkers that only come once in awhile.
Our (final) answer was to give them something to discover, it wouldn’t matter if they were a one time visitor of the library or a once a year visitor. The cabinets of curiosity would constantly be changing because of the links and connections visitors would make from the various combinations of opening doors and drawers. Along the way they would get a preview of items that could be in the exhibit and they would tag the ones they would like to be put into the exhibit. That would be their voting on the new set.
Now how do you actually get this done in umm about 3 and half hours? By assigning roles. We split the work up as well as talking points between each member including the studio leaders and anchors and then started working. Currently, I’m doing a crash course in Illustrator to make laser cut keys, and the other team members are figuring out projections. Hopefully we’ll all be done by tonight!
