Guest Honoraria

It is sometimes necessary and helpful to bring in outside guests to come give a talk, lecture, or share their work. For the most part, ITP/IMA welcomes the use of outside guests at certain points throughout the semester. However, these guests can only receive an honorarium under certain conditions:

CANNOT RECEIVE AN HONORARIUM:

  • A current ITP/IMA or NYU full-time faculty or staff member.
  • A current ITP/IMA or NYU post-doctoral research fellow.
  • A current ITP/IMA or NYU resident.
  • A current ITP/IMA student.

CAN RECEIVE AN HONORARIUM:

  • A current ITP or NYU adjunct faculty member. However, they would receive it as an additional compensation, not an honorarium.
  • Any guest not affiliated with NYU.

HONORARIA OVERVIEW

Honoraria payments are a gesture — a thank you — to working artists and/or those in the not for profit sector who join a class meeting — they should not be requested for industry professionals. Our typical range is $100-150 with a ceiling of $200. Whenever possible please ask in advance to ensure that we have a budget available, before you make a commitment to anyone.
In a 14 week class no more than 2 requests are appropriate — one for a 7 week class. Keep in mind this is not only a time-consuming internal process when it comes to payments — there is also a burden on the person getting the requested payment, as they will have to register with NYU, there could be tax burdens, and the like. Please consider whether an honorarium request is warranted, and worth it.

All submitted requests are subject to the department’s discretion and/or the Chair’s approval.
