Useful Highlights For Faculty
Disability Higher Education functions under a “self identification” concept. It is the responsibility of the disabled student to request reasonable accommodations and to manage the use of their accommodations.
Reasonable Accommodations are provided free of charge for students who are eligible to attend, enroll or benefit from the University’s programs, services, and activities.
Accommodations are provided on an individual basis dependent on the need for services, request for reasonable accommodations, documentation of disability and program requirements
Tips to Faculty
See the Moses Center’s FAQ section for more helpful information for faculty
Include this statement regarding accommodations in your syllabi:
“It’s crucial for our community to create and uphold learning environments that empower students of all abilities. We are committed to creating an environment that enables open dialogue about the various temporary and long-term needs of students and participants for their academic success. We encourage all students and participants to discuss possible accommodations that would best support their learning with faculty and staff. Students may also contact the Moses Center for Student Accessibility (212-998-4980) for resources and support. Link to the Moses Center for Student Accessibility .”
I have received a letter from Moses Center listing accommodations for a student. How do I know that the student’ s request for accommodations is warranted?
If you have a question about a particular accommodation, please contact the Moses Center to discuss your concern. Federal Law requires reasonable accommodations for students who have a documented disability. In order for a student to be granted accommodations, the student must submit documentation of a condition which significantly impacts the student’s ability to participate in the educational opportunities at NYU. Experienced disability higher education specialists review the student’s history and documentation, and decide on appropriate accommodations. The documentation on file at the Moses Center is kept current and reviewed periodically with the student to determine appropriate and effective accommodations. You can contact the Moses Center if you have any questions about the appropriateness of the student’s accommodation request.
What if a student requests an accommodation which I feel is not appropriate for my course?
If you have a question about a particular accommodation, please contact the Moses Center to discuss your concern.
Other notes
If a student fails an exam because he/she chose to take it without their accommodations, you are under no obligation to offer them a make up or another assignment to supplement the grade. Accommodations are not retroactive.
If a student tells you they have a disability, they may not feel comfortable disclosing what the disability is. Do not ask. Whatever the discussion, listen and then refer the student to the Moses Center. Any information the student tells you must remain confidential. Conduct all disability-related meetings in a private location. Do not accept disability documentation. This information is confidential and should be on record only in the Moses Center office.
Contact the student’s disability specialist if you are uncertain what is appropriate.
