Departmental policy is that Zoom is an option in case of Covid exposure, symptoms, or illness. This describes NYU’s policies concerning this COVID-19 Positive Tests, Symptoms, and Exposure
It is worth noting, that due to health privacy laws, we can not ask a student if they have Covid but in cases where they say they are sick and would like a Zoom link, reiterating the policy and sending them the above page is appropriate while accommodating their request for Zoom.
Faculty may opt to liberalize this policy for students that are otherwise sick but offering Zoom degrades the classroom experience for all and students may not use it to attend class while not present for other reasons.
The one exception to this is the beginning of the semester (during the drop/add period) for students that are late arrivals due to Visa issues which may be granted on a case by case basis with prior administrative approval.
NYU has a thorough help site for Zoom questions here. There is an NYU “Zoom Classroom hotline” at 212-998-3400, as well as a quick start guide here, which are probably good for you to review if this is something new to you. Remember to log in to NYU Zoom with your University credentials (not regular Zoom if you have that application downloaded privately).
Zoom Suggestions from the Full-Time Faculty:
- ITP/IMA faculty may obtain a laptop from the ITP/IMA Equipment Room as needed but your can use your own if you prefer.
- Run a zoom session and publicize the link to absent person(s).
- Hit record.
- You can borrow a USB mic from the ITP/IMA Equipment Room.
- Swivel the laptop so it might catch the whiteboard.
- Put the laptop in presentation mode in case you show things on it.
- Try to connect the zoom laptop to the big monitor (classroom machine should be already) so absent students can be seen.
- Try not to pace too far afield from the view of the laptop or it becomes radio.
- If it sometimes becomes radio it is okay, this is expected to better than nothing can’t be a replacement.
- Have students also present in front of the laptop or using the laptop. If they use their one swivel zoom laptop to big screen.
- Possibly swivel laptop or flip the web cam towards class if it is mostly a discussion between students.
