RESIDENT RESEARCHER

Hello! I am Sao Ohtake (b. 2000, Japan), an installation artist.
I am interested in how political tensions affect our daily lives and in the moments when people with different values reconnect through non-verbal and tactile interactions. To explore these themes, I create and exhibit artworks using textiles (soft materials) and sound. Through creating and presenting my work, I aim to offer viewers a sense of what it means to “be with someone” and to experience the quiet reciprocity of emotions exchanged in silence. This is a modest exploration of how we can continue to believe in the possibility of human connection—even in an age that often emphasizes division.
After studying Fine Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), I earned my MPS from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University. I specialize in developing concepts and transforming them into tangible artworks, and I can provide effective advice and support—especially for questions such as “I have an idea, but I don’t know how to bring it to life,” or “I don’t know how to construct a concept in the first place.” I would be happy to work with you on these challenges.
My primary media are textiles and sound, but I am also open to discussing other materials and approaches. Outside of art making, I enjoy catching insects (especially cicadas) and watching birds🐦🐦
