Where does the physical world end and the virtual world begin? How might AI shape choreography? On March 1 and 2, NYU’s ITP/IMA will co-host Romancing the Machine/Dancing at the Edge of Intelligence, a symposium with live performances, film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops examining the ways dance is understood and shaped by artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
Leading choreographers, dancers, composers, designers, AI artists, and software engineers will address topics including the early precursors of dance and technology, the ethics of technology, and the archive of memory and mythology.
"Dance is the most ephemeral of the arts. What might the technologies of robotics, motion capture, virtual, mixed, and augmented reality do to extend the life of dance beyond the stage? Our symposium brings together some of the most cutting-edge artists and practitioners to think through this question and help us reimagine the future possibilities of the dancing body,” says Julie Malnig, an NYU Gallatin professor and co-organizer of the event.
This symposium is co-sponsored by NYU Gallatin, the NYU Provost’s Office, Onassis ONX, The Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU Tisch, the Integrated Design & Media Program at NYU Tandon, NYU Steinhardt, and Jacob’s Pillow.
