Final Reflection: Who Am I?

What did you learn?

Since I started researching the topic I chose. I had a quilt difficult time narrowing it down because people are the most complicated thing, it is the hardest part to brief in such short words. However I found a little exit by each roll people are playing every day, so the first thing I have learned is to be serious to chose your topic, it is very important to continue your program. And the second thing is when u research your topic try to write down every detail related to your topic, and link them to narrow down your program. The third thing I have learned is to keep sharing unfinished work with someone who doesn’t know your work and ask for feedback from audiences, they will give the most direct idea of your program, then you can match it to the goal that you set up and try to delivery to audiences.

What feedback did you receive? Any reflection on the critique itself?

Most feedback I have got is your work is beautiful, and most people agree with my critique experience, but I have to be very careful to use the word, and when I choose pictures to match my topic, have to think about diversity and make all kind people feel comfortable after reading my work.

What might you do differently in terms of process or content?

I will change the pictures I have used in my book, and also talk a little more about why, and how I made this project, and some parts of my interview into my project will make it more complete. Also before presenting day, I will go to the tutorial center to make words more smoothly.

After I got the feedback from out class, I already made some changes to my Final post.

  1. Observe:

The project contains a handbook and a short video. We were not able to go through the work ourselves, but saw it in a presentation, PDF style. The point of view of the work seems to be top-down, telling the audience what to think and how to think about the specific topic. You can also feel the project topic is very personal to the creator.

    Analyze:
The grammatical mistakes were in the way of delivering concepts and intension of the creator to the audiences. The writing does not have to be perfect, but maybe at least proofread ahead. Some basic mistakes can be fixed with basic grammar check in Microsoft Words or 3rd party software such as Grammarly. For more complicated issues, NYU student can sign up for free English tutoring, international students were made aware of such service from the very beginning of school.

The overall layout of the handbook was nice, but the resolution of the stock images were sometimes not on the same level, which lower the overall quality to me. I know Suri is an amazing painter, so I was also hoping to see more original artworks in the video or handbook instead of stock images. Aside from the diversity issue mentioned by the visiting artist during Q&A, it also makes the project feel less moving as there’s no feeling of the creator’s personal touch.

    Interpret:
The work is concerned with parenting, and children not able to achieve or chase their own dream. I find the work more focus on East Asian or Chinese audiences, as it’s driven from the creator’s personal experience. It brought back some old memories of my own upbringing, as I resonate with some of the questions the creator asked during the presentation.

    Evaluate:
Intension to raise awareness about problematic parenting is strong. You can feel the passion of the creator on this topic. Although based on the project topic “Who am I,” I was originally expecting something more abstract and philosophical. I really don’t think the stock images are helping the intention, it takes a way the emotional expression of the work for me. My suggestion would be strengthen the part when you were building system maps as well as the researching part. I feel like this topic has a lot of potential, and am curious what you can figure out with a more developed system map. In terms of research, once the system map is more developed, I wonder if you can use more scholarly source other than mainstream articles online. What you have right now as your research are great, I just thought a more diverse and wider range of research might bring you somewhere interesting.
