5th 1-1 with Sarah & Peer Meeting 4
Both happened on Tues 4/25.
Main advice from Sarah is to schedule in-person product testings with at least 3~5 elderly (testing specifically on the social aspect of the product). Audio chat messages  vs. voice call vs. video call, or all. She also provided a lot of references on how this social function can be applied (visually) on the TV. For example, Screener for watching movies or tv shows together online and chat on the side.
Peer meeting was with Brian and Suri. Brian suggested me to focus more on the visuals first and then the interface. We both started to question on whether the social function is necessary because the product feels more of a personal thing (inner peace & calming effects). User testings would be really helpful at this stage. Suri also talked about her project updates – I like the storybook idea which serves to complement the exhibition experience.
Mentor Meeting 2
April 7, Had a longer talk (45min) with Jon to make up for the wifi issue we had last time.
Need to think through these questions:
Are they comfortable of immersive experience? Why at home? Can’t it just be at a community center? Perhaps, in the survey, need to document their desire (home/lobby/park/mall/etc.). Think about accessibility and usability.
The design methodology I’m implementing: HCD methodology – 3Ps (Pause, Pivot, Persist).
Regarding the survey, first use my own network & social to spread out and if more data is needed, try contacting the professional resource. For the prototype, try to set up at school first, and let your classmates experience & imagine the setting (to be where and used by whom). Video-document it.
Mentor Meeting 1
Had a 30-min talk with Jon, but due to his wifi problems, we will continue our talk this Friday. This initial talk was an introduction of my past work and my thesis topic & progress.
He sent a lot of helpful feedback through email,
-
Regarding the Aging Lab participants, it might be interesting if you could have separate 1:1 interviews with children of the parents you’re interviewing. The Lab might have a roster of family contacts who have shown interest in participating at all. Worth asking them.
-
Also, I almost always ask people to tell me what apps they have on their phone, particularly on the home screen. It can tell you a lot about their priorities, tech aptitude, and unmet needs.
Peer Meeting 3 (1-1 with Brian)
Mar 31st I scheduled another 1-1 with Brian, since I haven’t been attending the Thursday night peer meetings recently due to busy schedule. He provided detailed feedback on my production schedule, storyboard, as well as my survey questions (reframed some of my questions).
- production schedule: have a set of goals for each week
- storyboard: make 2~3 more scenes before my current scene 1
- survey: always try to remember what kind of data you want to get out of this survey; the form/tech is not the most important part but always keep in mind the main goal
Also I will try to attend all (but most if not all) of the remaining peer meetings, and maybe attend other sessions too:)
4th 1-1 with Sarah
3/29 had a conversation with Sarah to provide some current updates – my response to proposal feedback, interview progress, some visuals I made, survey questions, and production schedule. Sarah offered suggestions to my survey questions and also added things to my production schedule.
Here are additional notes:
- focus on 1 technology input (narrow down to an area to focus). Could be voice interface, remote control on tv screen or projector, etc. Like before I had a clear path which is AR/VR, although now I’m switching the path, need to decide on another asap.
- define the 1 goal and multiple sub-goals surrounding it. Don’t mix up.
- Think about which approach: are you using an existing design methodology (like design thinking, inclusive design, or universal design) to create a product? OR, are you creating a protoype in order to develop a new methodology (for the specific use case of the technologies for aging populations)

1-1 with Brian (Peer Meeting 2)
Here are some notes I wrote down during our conversation on Mar 9th:
- be specific when testing AR/VR apps with elders: try to test 3 to 4 things, not just the outcome of VR/AR.
- such as enjoyability, accessibility, and complexity
- how to set it up and their react to that (like I set it up first and then let them try to set up a VR headset)
- accessibility of design language in technology can be a huge thing for them
- also test 3 or 4 different forms other than AR/VR (like the alternate things I’m thinking of)
- such as projection mapping, social apps, websites
- be open to change and more specific about the timeline/ personal milestones
- add detailed tasks; remember to document everything
- since my project is so dependable of others’ response/availability, time is tight and might need to tweak around the plan often
- reach out to someone who is an expertise or is partner within the health/medical/psychology field
- does the sounds of rain/ nature elements really help with mental wellbeing/lowering anxiety?
- Brian’s undergrad capstone project!
