Monstar Lab

Sustainable fashion-forward design that inspire people to give \"second life\" to material.

The Monstar Lab Project is a fashion design challenge based on discarded and donated materials/fabrics to recreate new outfits as inspiration for the growing online 'do-it-yourself' community. Short uploaded video episodes hosted by fashion designer, Youn Ji Choi, offer detailed accounts of the step-by-step creative process. This documented process highlights problems encountered and successful solutions. Rather than explaining detailed instructions to create specific outfits, our main objective is to change how people view materials often thought as trash into a valuable resource. Our hope is to create an open dialogue with our online viewers to share creative projects ideas.

Currently the online DIY communities break down step-by-step instructions leaving out all the creative problems. We want to focus our attention on the creative process and document the problems people may face when dealing with this particular challenge. A great deal of inspiration was found in the ITP community. We consulted with ITP alumni, Giana Gonzalez and her thesis, Hacking Couture who\'s advice and guidance helped with the video documentation.

Our target audience is the creative DIY online community who is interested in turning materials around the house into fashionable clothing.

Currently this project is a blog with video documentation. We hope to create an open dialogue with other DIYers and share creative solutions. The Monstar Lab blog offers people to ask questions and offer suggestion to this semester project. Our videos are made with the intention that rather then documenting a detailed tutorial, we hope to inspire creative thinking.

Monstar Lab is a blog made up with a various forms of audio/visual aid. This included video documentation, images and text to communicate. The blog allows viewers to offer up questions and comments to share with others who visit our blog.

Through this process we gained a great deal of experience in video documentation and research of fabric materials. We discovered that there is a niche audience online interested in sustainable fashion and hope to further explore further the possible dialogues online.
