Description

Latch to Latch is a multimedia performance originally filmed on a rooftop in Brooklyn by Nick Bratton, Sehyun Kim, Joe Mango, Chanwook Min, and Tigran Paravyan. The piece centers around a canvas that is blank at the beginning of the performance. In one possible iteration, the canvas is painted in front of the curious viewer according to a previously designed outline of geometric shapes — in particular, a smattering of triangles arranged in the center of the canvas, surrounded by inwardly sloping trapezoids — that is projected onto the canvas as a guide for the painter. When the outline is finished, the painter fills in the shapes as (s)he pleases. Once this is accomplished, a projection sequence is mapped to the freshly painted canvas and though the sequence is programmed in advance, the relationship between the projected light and the painter’s choices is unique to each performance. The mapping sequence is synchronized with an electronic music track pre-recorded with analog synthesizers.

As the projection runs, what first appeared flat takes on dynamic depth. The canvas becomes a four dimensional space in that it appears to be a room of changing proportions. The shared narrative between the visual and aural components of the performance are a reflection of our original inspiration — a feeling of disorientation, speed, and isolation in the contemporary urban environment.
