Selfmap is an application that allows a user to view and explore a multi-layered, graph-based representation of their city. Using spatial abstraction, the resulting map aims to be truer to their urban experience of the city, alone and with others.
Description
A typical map (think Google Maps) represents all features geographically with the same emphasis. It lacks the distorted subjectivity of our spatial and experiential perception. In this project, I propose a map that relies on simple cartographical abstraction processes (e.g. angle simplification) and constitutes a series of layered graphs based on the user travelling patterns spatially and temporally. The resultant representation emphasizes the perceptually notable places of the user, whether personal or collective (i.e. landmarks). Such representation offers an alternative take on map-making where familiar commutes are given higher importance compared to the static landscape of typical maps.
