Working Rhythms is an interactive music installation that invites listeners to actively engage with a composition made from sounds of the workplace. It consists of sculptures that can be arranged and rearranged to change musical loops in real time.

Description

Recorded music is more accessible than ever, but music listening remains a primarily passive activity. Working Rhythms blurs the line between listener and composer with a dynamic, participatory remixing experience.

The music and design draw inspiration from the environments and stories of New York City’s workplaces. Field recordings of everyday sounds form the sonic palette for the music, while geometric abstractions of the sites themselves serve as the visual aesthetic.

Through the physical positioning of ten different sculptures, participants manipulate music loops to produce a unique, ephemeral arrangement. Six wired pedestals detect where each sculpture has been placed and play back a corresponding musical element.
