To make recycling appropriated content on Kuaishou easier for grassroots digital creative entrepreneurs, a website connected to an auto-editing service and a video database is developed to help them survive on the video platform.

Yufeng Zhao

One Free Click Entry Page
https://studio.youtube.com/video/XAiOpUtHbV0/edit

Description

One Free Click is an interactive website that showcases trending yet replicable Kuaishou videos within selected hashtags and generates auto-edited derivative videos, ready to upload with a single click. This project is inspired by the structural practice of video reproduction on Kuaishou, the leading short video platform in China.

Kuaishou is known for the unabashed earthiness of its contents and its encouragement for mass entrepreneurship by means of monetization of digital content. On Kuaishou, in order to speed up the production and bring down the cost, there are a large group of videos that are reproductions of existing ones. Many reproduce the same plots, scenes or lines, and some are just collages or re-edits of existing videos. However, thanks to Kuaishou’s delicately curated recommendation system, the lack of content originality does not affect the publicity of the videos in attracting new audiences to the publishing accounts. Such workflows are often passed down from established Kuaishou influencers to newcomers through self-run mentorship programs.

One Free Click is a piece of web art as well as a product designed for newcomers to the Kuaishou business. The entry page presents a collection of videos under a few popular tags among the reproduction practice. Under each tag, a condensed view of the existing corpus is shown in order to quickly familiarize the user with its creative context. While unveiling the phenomenon, it also responds with an automated editing workflow for simple video reproduction, free of charge to average Kuaishou users struggling with mechanical labor and hassles in their mobile editing software. With a click of a button, it generates a random video from a database of existing ones for immediate downloading and publishing. It aims to provoke thoughts in China’s landscape of fast-entertainment, mass entrepreneurship, and the ecosystem for content creators.

While user is working out on the treadmill, they can choose to exercise either by the lake or in the woods. They can make a choice on the treadmill panel in the starting page of my project. The user holds a device on their hand to detect whether he/she is walking or running. An accelerometer is placed in the device to test how fast the user is waving his/ her arm. If the devise decided that the user is walking, it will switch to the walking mode and the virtual scenery will play at a slower speed. If the devise decided that the user is running, it will switch to the running mode and the virtual scenery will play at a faster speed. If the user decided to change a location to run, they can press the return button and go back to the starting page to choose a new location.

I attached the IMU to the spinning chair in my room and wrote a program that can draw something based on the spinning of the chair. If I started to run the sketch at the beginning of the day, the final output would be a beautiful art piece. This project can reflect all the subtle motions on your chair. And it would tell you that your daily life is also a piece of art.

Personal music streaming system focused on listening to whole album with my own album cover.

Description

Cover Covers is a personal music streaming environment that appreciates the concept of album. It offers an experience of listening to albums with self-created album cover.

With the emergence of streaming services like Spotify, people gained easy access to music in a unit of songs. It brought music consumers a lot of convenience, but being able to curate a playlist with favorite songs, people stopped listening to albums as a whole. Listening to whole albums require time and sometimes endurance, but it provides us with a different experience that is certainly worthwhile. Even knowing this, I always find my playlist with songs from different albums.

I wanted to force myself to listen to albums. It's not that listening to individual songs is bad. I genuinely wanted to listen to albums, but my laziness and various excuses (eg. I'm too busy to sit down and listen to music for 30 minutes) stopped me from doing it.

So, I decided to design a process that would make listening to albums a fun activity. Human beings tend to value their own creations than those of others' regardless of its quality. The more beginner one is, the stronger this tendency. That's why my first pasta tasted better than restaurants'. If I were able to recreate an element of a music album, I would be eager to listen to it.

Not being able to draw and paint, I used a set of digital tools including machine learning and Photoshop to cover an album cover (as in covers in music). Then, I created a system where I can simply type a name of an album and have it played on my streaming website. It automatically swaps original album cover images with my own covers hosted on my blog.

An application that analyzes sneakers on the resale market.

Yijie Zou

Screenshot of the data visualization feature of the application
https://youtu.be/QYNUsGlq_ow

Description

Due to low stocks, it is hard for consumers to purchase limited-edition sneakers in the retail market. A large number of consumers would purchase limited-edition sneakers in the resale market. There are numerous sneaker resale platforms around the world. In China, the two most popular platforms are Poizon(Dewu) and Nice. Outside China, platforms like StockX and Goat have a huge user base. These platforms do not have sneakers in stock, instead, they play the role of middleman in the trading process.

Due to the rarity of sneakers, sneaker prices in the resale market are usually higher than their retail prices and are fluctuant, which is similar to the stock market. Sneaker resale platforms outside China provide customers with historical data about sneakers such as price trends and trading volume. However, Chinese resale platforms do not want to be involved sneakers with investment, so customers cannot have an overview of the price trend of a sneaker, which is an important reference of their purchase decision.

This project analyzes data of sneakers in resale platforms and provides detailed statistics to help consumers make good decisions. Provided with data like history price trends, consumers can purchase sneakers when their prices are comparatively low. Also, data can indicate the popularity of sneakers and predict their prospect. Moreover, based on the record of the transaction, the application can analyze the possibility of illusory popularity. There are sneaker dealers who massively purchase sneakers and create an illusion that a sneaker is extremely popular. When the price increases, they sell these sneakers at a higher price to earn money. The characteristic of such activity is that the trading volume of a sneaker rises sharply and usually a single buyer purchase a large number of pairs. This is a warning signal for regular consumers because the price will fall sharply after dealers clear their inventory. However, all these features are not provided by resale platforms in China and some of them also cannot be found in platforms outside China. This project's ultimate goal is to help people purchase their dreaming sneakers at a reasonable price.

A digital subjective map of the 8th floor IMA space at the NYUSH Pudong campus, where users leave and share their memories attached to any location.

Zheng Zhang

main 1 2 3 4
https://youtu.be/plVQvrSiIhQ

Description

Distinct from traditional mapping/cartography which intends to represent a territory as close to reality as possible, subjective mapping aims at producing a map using one’s own physical sense, emotion and memories that are not necessarily objective. Subjective mapping can be understood as the cognitive process that one reproduces his/her “story of experiences” at a specific location through making a map of the place (Nomadways). In creating such a map, one “stores and expresses his/her emotions into minimalistic shapes”.

The physical territory of the IMA spaces, added with personal annotations, is a community-created subjective map. The idea of this project is born from the context that our school is moving to a new campus in the Shanghai Qiantan area, and the current building will no longer be accessible by the NYU Shanghai community.

This project is aimed at creating a digital heritage of the current campus with students’ memory attachments, so that we can go back and revisit our alma mater when we are not able to do so physically in the future. Given the COVID-19 situation, the goal of this project can be extended to provide a community space for students, fellows and faculties to bond with each other while the campus is inaccessible. The project utilizes 1) Mozilla Hubs as the frontend and backend to host both the virtual space of the Pudong campus as well as personal memory pins in various forms, and 2) Spoke by Mozilla to create the 3D model of the campus itself. Given time constraints, this project focuses on objectively mapping the 8th floor of the Pudong campus and intends to create a subjective map of spaces related to IMA. The project will allow users to immerse themselves in the building, interact with other online users, and to drop down “pins of memory” at any location.

In a broader sense, this project will enable the current and future NYU Shanghai community to have an accessible space to document their individual attachments about the Pudong campus. Furthermore, it can also be a place for people to share their attachments, and thus enhance connections within the community.
