Beneath the words is about investigating ways to aesthetically interpret traditional wisdom inherent in Japanese philosophical sayings.
Description
Japanese philosophy has always been fascinating and somehow mysterious from my perspective. But every time I read about those concepts and words, I somehow feel a bit more anxious and confused though I try to calm down and read about Japanese wisdom. This bothers me from time to time. And I know it will be beneficial if I understand them, but most of the time, the words are explained in a vague way. That’s how I start to wonder if I can find a certain narrative that can vividly tell more about the words, and make people feel comfortable and at ease when trying to probe into Japanese words and concepts as an outsider. The goal is to let people who are not previously interested in Japanese philosophy to get a sense of it and intrigue further interests if possible.
In recent years, Augmented Reality has been widely used as an engaging storytelling medium in a variety of industries. With high speed connectivity, data collection, and machine learning, we are moving towards an era where the real world can be organically combined with virtual elements as a unique way of storytelling. And with this platform, I see the possibility of interpreting my thoughts visually with a scene or two for viewers to understand more.
A hand bind book with some patterns and words on a few pages but mostly blank serve the role as a base medium. Viewers will get to experience the feeling of the words and interact with different scenes upon scanning the patterns/words and learn more behind certain Japanese concept in AR.
