ABOUT NYU ITP & THESIS 2019

ITP is a two-year graduate program located in the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University whose mission is to explore the imaginative uses of media and technology — how they might augment, improve and bring delight and art into people’s lives. Perhaps the best way to describe us is a Center for the Recently Possible.

The ITP Thesis is just one semester long and is taught as a class within the two-year period. It is the one class in which students work individually (i.e. not part of a team) and develop a project or their own choosing from concept to a proof-of-concept prototype.

The goal of an ITP education is that students leave here with the tools to do whatvever they want to do. Those tools include: knowing how to find out what they don’t know; to be ready for change, anticipate it; a willingness to experiment, fail, try again, etc; how to take an idea and make it real; to find their own strengths and deepen them; to follow your passions and trust their gut.

The faculty needs to see evidence both of mastery of these tools or qualities and of specific skills they have learned in their two years in the program.

TO THE CLASS OF 2019

A new galaxy’s emerging and about to go viral––
Not irregular, not elliptical, not dwarf and not spiral.

It’s not one that many have witnessed before,
It’s been locked for 2 years on Tisch’s 4th Floor.

2019, it’s the class to observe,
Because when they’re unleashed, the axis will swerve.

No zodiac maniacs, no dipper (what is that anyway?)
But clusters of stars who work hard, dream and play.

It’s a whole new catalog of astral constellations
Of art, of music, of design, installations.

No Orion, No Perseus, Cassiopeia or Pleiades,
But machine learning, storytelling, intriguing identities.

The future imagined, society improved...
(Don’t stop me now, I’m just getting my groove)

These groupings are helpful, but only a blueprint
Each star in this firmament has its own footprint.

Not one of these celestial orbs is the same,
So it’s best, I believe, to call them by name:

Some seem connected: Zahra and Zohreh. Chengchao and Chengtao
Camilla-Camille,Yu-hao, YiYao and Jiyao...

Daniel and Dan, Chelsea,Huiyi and Eva... all Chens
Aidan and Alden, Sams (Hains and Chasan)

Some so inseparable--why even try?
Twin stars Barak and Ivy, Brandon and Maí

(They’re others, I’m sure, but I won’t hazard a guess.
Stars sometimes switch partners, it’s often a mess.)

Look very closely, there’s Ridwan, Amitabh and Anita
Vidia, Chi-An, and Alan,.. what could be sweeter?

I’ll tell you! Isa, Dominick, Kemi, Ella and Erin
Fanni, Gabriel, Nicolás E, Nico Sanin,

Alexandra, Asha, Assel--they all shine so brightly
Hadar, Ayal, Anthony--they twinkle so sprightly.

Will, Ellen, Caleb, Stevie (oops,Stephanie) Michaels F&B
Elizabeth, Lucas, Xiao, Xiran, and Haiyi

You can find them all lurking ( working?) in the J-Area
With Effy, Heng, Nathier, Roland and Azalea.

More stars, I bet, than you‘ve ever thought of
Add Beverly, Hau, Itay(new papa) and Arnav.

Brave stars--Hafi, Marco, Amena,Terrick
Carrie, Vince, Kellee, Luna. And also of merit

Simon(so trusting), Ilana, Sofia, Sandy and Tong
They can be found coding with Phil aka Dong.

Shreiya, Roxanne, Keerthana make quite an ensemble,
My eyes grow dim, I fear I will stumble!

Rebecca, Mengzhen, Max, Lucas, MH––
This is getting long..better pick up the pace.

You-jin, Yeon Hee, Yang, Yi-fan (no, Alice),
Jim, James, Jillian, Jesse, Jarone, Lin, Lu and Nick Wallace,

Krizia, Kimberly, Joo-Hyun, Kaiche and Lauren
Katya and Jenna, Jason, Meicheng and Oren.

These stars are so bright--even visible by day
(though not Friday morning)

Variables, for loops, arduinos, scads of resistors
They’ll make a big bang, who needs Seven Sisters?

Do other galaxies, scientists ponder, show evidence of life?
Haven’t I made it clear... with life we are rife!

Each class, like each star, has a signature sign…
Yours is the last in a 40 year line

To graduate from this cherished, vibrant, often messy, sweet spot.
A new 4th floor in Brooklyn will be our new lot.

Go off now, be bold, spread joy, do good--we know you will glitter
And then come back and visit–– in person, not just on twitter!
