Making an idea come to life
Creating the “cabinets of curiosity” was a team effort, where there was a lot of emphasis on effort! Only because there were multiple ideas that were floating around and no one would pin down a single one. It felt like we were going to present a series of ideas and possibilities instead of having a physical representation of an idea.
When reviewing all of the ideas, ...
Week 2: scouting the NYPL
Dan Marwit from the Digital Experience Department of the New York Public Library gave us the new design challange: to put the treasures of the NYLP into the Gottesman exhibition hall. So we went out and scouted the room.
The room is high and highly decorated: panels on the ceiling, 4 marble arches, decoration on all the walls. The current exhibition covers most of ...
Importance of Making Connections
“…gain knowledge when you connect the dots…otherwise it’s just data.” -Nelson (member of this 2 or more group)
This little nugget of thought, encompasses all of what I want a visitor to experience and gain when they interact with something, whether it be an artifact, an installation, or a hands-on activity. I want visitors to be engaged and have to fun, but I would love love love ...
Day 7: Robert Krulwich on How to Treat Your Audience
- Help the audience to become your co-authors.
If you actively involve your audience in your presentation EITHER give clear instructions in the beginning OR – if you do not want to spoil the surprise – make sure that the process is easy and repetitive so that the audience can figure out what is going on.
- Keep the audience in first place, your panic second.
Always remember what ...
Day 6: Toilet Seats
“Toilet seats. Slightly off in size”, Alisha says, “or in height – so that the seat is lower than you would expect”. Alisha, Guillermo and me are sitting in the Hi-fi / Lo-fi studio. Her statement is one of those that are necessary to break a too deep and too thoughtful silence when you desperately try to come up with an idea.
Our 2-day assignment is ...
Driftwood – the Prequel
I think we won the “construction site captioning contest” 😉
Pin & Present on BIG and Little
I appreciated the critical insights that Robert Krulwich provided to all of our presentations because we can take what he said and apply it to all aspects of creating for people.
Some things that he said reminded me of what we should be paying attention to when coming up with interactives, installations, activities, exhibits, anything that you want someone to be engaged with pretty much.
- Don’t panic ...
Week 2: Radiolab Presentations from 2 or more
Two or More Studio presented three projects:
- red dot the climber
- driftwood
- spooning in the cell
Red dot the climber combined audience interaction with different narratives. Our audience was glad to participate, holding up red or white pages of paper for the camera to analyze.
The driftwood project presented a boat built of driftwood that takes its passengers on an exploration of different scales. Through portholes they can see the ...
Week 2: Radiolab Studio Report from 2 or more
Robert Krulvic from RadioLab gave us a very open ended challange: Big and Little.
In the “2 or more” studio we used an intresting technique for brainstorming: our studio leader, Danae Colomer elicited perceptions and emotions from us: “what do you feel when you think of small?”, “What does Big smell like?”, …. From these atoms we constructed narratives and came up with titles: “The ...
