Discarded Future

Rafael Gross Brown

A connected trigger video on climate change/sustainable development and individual engagement with these issues and climate change mitigation

http://www.rafagb.com/Thesis

Description

A website that hosts a connected trigger video. “Connected” refers to the fact that it uses the viewer's geolocation to embed content into the video, and to gather data about resources (local, individual action-based initiatives) that the user can engage in/with. It also gathers realtime headlines related to climate change, which are also embedded into the video. The video is 80 seconds long. The project will be presented using geolocation, and hardcoding different cities' geolocation to compare the final results (e.g., use Topeka, Los Angeles, or Albany as geo inputs).

Soil for the Air

Erika Hansen Miller

Soil for the Air is a platform for a crowd-sourced research project on soil biology, fungus, and climate change.

http://www.soilfortheair.org/

Description

Soil for the Air is a physical and digital platform for a crowd-sourced research project on soil biology, carbon-sequestering fungi, and climate change. The aim of Soil for the Air is to use the power of the crowd and the enthusiasm of citizen scientists to rally around an important cause – climate change mitigation – and to break down the wall between institutionalized science and the general public. In the process, the project hopes to make an important discovery about using agricultural soils to remove carbon from the air and store it below ground in healthy soils.

AQUA-BRIDGE

Youjin Shin

A web based smart data management platform for monitoring water quality and creating a crowd-sourced world water quality map

http://www.aqua-bridge.org/

Description

Tackling drinking water issues in developing countries with well filters has largely failed due to the limited field data on how successful the filters have been in reducing disease. Part of the problem has been ineffective communication between filter users in local villages and the project managers monitoring the filters. AQUA-BRIDGE will develop a streamlined system for logging water quality and the data visualization will be developed for project managers to use in data analysis and the public to view on the web. In addition, AQUA-BRIDGE offers the water quality kits so the public can also have the opportunities to test their own water. The aggregated data from the public will create the world water quality database and it will be shared through visualization in real-time.

Gowanus Creek Nature Hike

Kathryn Adee

Research in urban ecology that resulted in a mobile web app for identifying, cataloging, and mapping the flora of the Gowanus Canal Area. By looking at current species, we can begin to imagine the future Gowanus as an ecosystem, not just an environmental disaster or real estate investment.

http://urbaneco.herokuapp.com/

Description

Gowanus Creek Nature Hike is a web tool for scientists, students, and Gowanus enthusiasts to explore the species that have managed to survive and thrive near our local Superfund Site, the Gowanus canal. Participation in the reporting process will hopefully increase knowledge and awareness of one's natural surroundings.

NightWitches

Caroline Sinders

An interactive true transmedia story played on mobile and the web about the WWII female Russian fighter pilot Nadya Popva.

Description

It’s an interactive story built in Unity with a web page that looks like a wikipedia page but actually holds the next two levels of this story. I am interested in exploring the tensions between “video games” and “interactive stories” and taking the elements of a narrative, placing them in a game engine, but making a thing that is not a video game (repeat, NOT A VIDEO GAME) but has the interaction of a game but what the user is finding in the game are plot points.
The project is an interaction is an experimental narrative, where the only thing the user finds in this game like environment are plot points to a narrative. THe narrative is designed to be assembled in a non sequential way.

JujuBox

Moe Shahrooz

The JujuBox is an intimate small scale virtual 3D theater that gives the audience control over a wide array of audiovisual effects.

http://thesis.itp.io/students/ms6699/progress

Description

The JujuBox is a unique interactive musical video theater. The user is initially given the option to choose between a variety of performers. Once each performance begins, the user has the ability through a wide variety of physical controls, to manipulate various audiovisual aspects of the performance. The box itself acts as a virtual stage. A flat panel LCD screen is nested at the bottom, facing up. With two sheets of clear glass carefully placed at precise angles inside, the reflections from the screen provide the illusion of three-dimensional imagery. Additionally, the dual glass sheets provide an added sense of depth.

VidCode

Alexandra Diracles

A learning tool designed to ignite girls interest in computer programming through video art.

http://vidcode.herokuapp.com/

Description

VidCode aims to create a conversation and a community of coders among teenage girls. The idea is to pair a medium in which they are already fluent—creating video content—with learning to program. VidCode also allows teenagers to be social as they learn about code: to take videos of their life, edit code with friends, and share information with each other. In my research I found that girls' interest in CS increases when they can pair programming with self expression. The experience begins by creating a video, uploading it to the site, then editing it by scrubbing values, mixing and matching filters such as “grain” or “blur”. In the future, advanced video programming tracks will be available in algorithmic art, motion, and storytelling.

VENT NY

Jon Wasserman

VentNY is a fast, casual space to release the pressure of injustice great and small.

http://ventny.herokuapp.com

Description

VENT NY is a website where people can post short ideas and frustrations and comment on other people's posts. The thing that makes this site unique is that you can only reply with web links. This disrupts the ability to over-editorialize, troll and hijack conversation. Keeping the interaction lean and easy lowers the barrier to entry and improves signal to noise digestion.
