In this spacial time, many of us were trapped in our houses and were not able to return to the campus. Through this project, I want to make miniature version of the things that we miss the most in our campus together,to bging back the memory of being on campus to the users/players.Through some interviews with my friends where I ask them what place or thing do they miss about ab, I gathered their answers and selected several things that I will use different fabrication methods to recreate.
The blocks are consist of 7 different pieces made with 7 different material, including four kinds of fabric, metal, wood, plastic. Each of the blocks will be in a unique shape, thus easier for blind kids to feel, touch, recognize, and move. Also, the material will help them in building their blocks as well. The goal is to train the space perception of blind kids and to teach them to tell different materials.
However, during my design process, I decided to make Qube available for normal kids as well. I added braille on each block so that normal kids can learn and build more empathy with blind kids. To play with Qube, there should be at least two normal kids and two sets of blocks. One covers his/her eyes with the eye mask and create different figures with the blocks. The other, also wearing the mask, will try to mimic the shape with the help of material and braille.
Due to a serial of influential social problem about cyberbullying recently, I want to create a toy that help people to understand the feeling of being bullied online and the negative impact of showing malicious intentions to others. Also, play can learn some appropriate way to dealing with cyber bullying. My idea now is to create one computer like box and one heart like bag that hang on a holder. Player pick up cards from computer box and read comments on it. If the comment contains offensive words, the player should put the card into the bag. If the card has positive words, the player can take out one card from the bag. When the cards in the bag are heavy enough and the bag fall down from the holder, the game end.
this toy is a decorative toy rather than a functional one. to play with it, you can put together the cheese and the burned toast together or detach them.
the model is built in cinema 4d. the toast is printed in hard resin material and the cheese is printed in rubber.
The two characters are from the Tale of King Arthur. The character in the front is King Arthur, while the character in the back is Mordred. In the original legend, Mordred was the son and nephew of Arthur and was born by Morgause, Arthur’s sister. Knowing that he was the bastard of the King, Mordred is always trying to crusade against Arthur. He managed to make himself King of Britain when Arthur was in France, and their armies fought each other at Camlann, which is known as the battle of Camlann. In the end, Mordred is dead, and he severely injured Arthur, which proclaimed the end of a dynasty.
In my automata, I create an if-story for Arthur and Mordred. If Mordred did not hate Arthur so much, one day they could sit down together, shake their hands, and defuse the hatred. So this is the scene that shows their charging posture in a battle, where they fight together against the enemy.
The name of this storytelling project is “The Carp Leaping Dragon Gate”. It’s a derivative of the ancient Chinese folk story. In Chinese culture, carp fish are always considered as a lower life. They’re vulgar, inferior, and are despised by other living creatures. However, legends say that in the east ocean far away, there is a giant gate called the “Dragon Gate”. The Gate is so high that it could reach the sky. It is said that the mighty god Emperor Yu once made a promise that if there is a carp fish that could jump over the Dragon Gate, he will turn the fish into a noble dragon. Thus, every year during the spring season, in front of the Dragon Gate there is the carp fish that keeps jumping up and down, up and down, in order to become strong enough to jump over the dragon gate and become the mighty dragon.
Star is a soft, bright yellow, a human-like star with a red heart. Star’s red soft heart can be opened, with a 3D-printed hard heart into it. Star also has a small, delicate small room, with a pillow, quilts, a book, a phone, a wood knife in it. So far she has two sets of clothes, one is a loose comfortable T-shirt and another is a sexy camisole & skirt. Players can choose to make beddings/clothes/scarves for Star by themselves. The big idea of my project is to create something for people, especially females that can make them feel warm, support, and independence. After communicating with Marcela, I also added some accessories about how to save yourself from sexual abuse to tell people how to protect themselves, so the toy is a combination of two parts. The ‘Empathy’ in the project first refers to the share feelings of warmth, support, independence, second refers to the knowledge share of reactions against sexual abuse. This concept comes from Li Xingxing, a 14-year-old girl who suffers from sexual abuse. The overall sense of purpose is to help people to live a better life, gaining mental strength and relief from the stuffed toy. After adding the accessories, there is also an educational purpose. Generally, the players can sleep with Star if they want, and they can place Star in its room when needed, they can also DIY clothes/accessories for Star if they want.
The toy is a ragdoll cat called Bubble, who has strong muscles and loves drinking bubble teas. I designed this for my friend Jasmine, who loves ragdoll cat and bubble teas so much. Bubble is strong because Jasmine is in our school’s volleyball team and always hits me as the strength that she thinks is small. I designed 4 back-up bubble teas in different favors based on the bubble teas we have had together, and Jasmine can switch the bubble tea in Bubble’s hat every day.
I created a series of soft toys that represent the six basic emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, and surprise. I made each one a different color, face, and pose to represent this emotion. Doing this, I made sure that the emotions are very distinct from each other. For packaging, I included a simple explanation of each emotion, so children will get a better understanding of how to express what they’re feeling. My ideal user for this project is children between the ages of 3-7 because these ages are key in social development. With these toys, I want to make sure children are able to express themselves and understand how others are feeling because of their understanding of the emotion.
The name of my project is called Piggy(Pearl) on Palm. I got the inspiration of its name from a Chinese idiom, which means something or someone is very precious like a bright pearl on the palm. And the pronunciation of the word “pig” is the same as that of the word “pearl”, so this project is a round little pig with a round light ball inside it. I made this for my mom because she likes piggies very much and she has also bought several piggy decorations to put them at home. My mom also likes matryoshka dolls very much and we have several of them at home as well. This toy is round and can sway like a tumbler. Also, being similar to the matryoshka dolls, it can be opened. There is a light ball inside it, making it a little night lamp as well. And if the light bulb or LED is taken out of the toy, it can also be a container to put something, such as candies inside. Because my mother also likes to buy various containers to keep things in order, this toy can also provide such a function for her.
