Description

As virtual reality transforms us into an immersive space, the wandering experience in the synthetic garden resembles our experiences in the REM sleep stage, which is associated with dreaming, memory consolidation, learning, and problem solving to visit our unconscious mind.

Using human bodies, gestures, imaginary creatures with elements from man-made world and nature, the garden unwraps a world inspired by the unheeded nature, fantasy fictions, traditional Chinese garden art (Yuanlin) and rituals, speculating the relationship between man and nature in the digital neutropia.

It will also be like an interactive audio-visual experience with spatial music arranged throughout the journey.

Late Night Island is a VR meditation experience that attempts to recall the warm, quiet but lonely feelings.

Wen Chen

It's a hill with several light poles, and a coffee shop is in the behind. it's a coffee shop at night, on the left there are posters on the wall. three posters on the wall, and there is a button on the wall too. This is the coast of the island, the wave is receding from the coast.

Description

Late Night Island is a VR meditation experience that attempts to recall the warm, quiet but lonely feelings. Following the light hint, visitors will find the mysterious coffee shop hiding behind rocks and forest, and enjoy the music I chose. This piece is aimed to help people relieve the pressure and embrace the loneliness during quarantine by creating an imaginary resort.

This work is inspired by my personal experience of staying at a coffee shop until midnight. I used to visit cozy and dim light coffee shops when I didn't feel like going home alone. Coffee shop for me is an escape from the boring and limited space. Currently, many people like me are restricted to our own rooms, which results in the feeling of ultimate isolation and despair. Through creating a nonexistent island in Virtual Reality, I would like to invite people to take a break and get away from the limit of reality.

Description

Purell Wonderland is designed in a time when quarantine first started, and our social behavior was just being deployed to assuage fears, understand risk, improve public health and implement social distancing strategies.

For the designer herself, she got bored for staying at her room in the first 2 weeks in the quarantine, and was touched by new-born flowers once she went out for a walk. She believes we all have some connections with the nature and that matters.

That's why she designed a place where provides exposure to a virtual nature and humor to help ease coronavirus anxiety. The landscape is shaped with graphical lines into the look of hand sanitizer, an essential object in current social environment, but it's hard to recognize until you reach to a higher place.

Description

Command Escape is a 3D rendered video which presents a fictional universe situated in a far future inside of the desktop background. Starting from one of the iconic images shipped with Windows XP, bliss.png, the piece imagines a world where the desktop has evolved into an ecosystem which blends together elements of nature, ritual, computer iconography and mythology.

The video is framed as a journey inside of the desktop’s 3-dimensional space, presented through the first person perspective of a human exploring the place. The traveler starts in an enclosed space, surrounded by rotating computer monitors, and slowly makes their way out, passing a number of symbols associated with the desktop’s world: a CRT monitor framing the hills, an altar to the Recycle Bin, a cemetery made out of folder icons. The pace of walking through the space is slow, with sound and subtitles giving you insight into the traveler mind.

A loose retelling of the myth of Icarus, Command Escape proposes a speculative future to our engagement with technology, and creates a myth around it – one that is slow, romantic and absurd.
