I will present a genealogy of related original pieces intended to bring up questions of representation, as well as facilitate collaboration and theft. Conventional roles for notation, especially in music, are normative and may not expose anything about the initial affinities that guided the composition. In addition, work that addresses recent technologies faces constant devaluation because of the transiency of that technology. These are very real threats to the legitimacy of many new media forms, including computer music. I explore how new ideas about notation might improve the standing power and transparency of realized forms, and furthermore may give the creative community a protocol for sharing ideas across disciplines.

Dance is a field that suffers from a lack of a tangible product, which inspired my desire to create \”performance artifacts.\” I define performance artifacts to be the residue of a performance that, as much as possible, mirrors the experience of viewing the performance in space and over time. To achieve this goal, I developed and recorded a short dance piece with two dancers. The dance is rear-projected onto six panels suspended in mid-air at different depths and heights. As the piece progresses, the most recent phrase moves forward in depth on the panels, representing the passage of time spatially. The recordings of the dance were taken at different angles and perspectives to better mirror the different perspectives an audience might have on a performance depending on their seating and focal point. In transferring the performance experience to a place outside of the theater and outside of a single 2-dimensional viewing plane, I hope to better express the experience of viewing a performance, which by nature is an experience of time and of space.

Time in Six Parts is a series of attempts to unravel and re-present time through alternative perspectives. The hope is to demystify scales of time that are out of our immediate reach and explore alternative approaches to marking time.

StreetForms is a web and mobile-based platform/toolset that hopes to encourage new forms of creative intervention in urban space. By integrating Google’s “Street View” service with a custom creative interface, I want to expand the notion of ‘public art’ to include digital visual augmentation and annotation.

It\’s all around us is a web project for caregivers who are in their 20s and 30s. The purpose of the project is to provide a central space where people can connect with one another, share their stories through writing and photography and gather resources. Many support environments exist in the physical world and on the web, though few for this age range. There are many caregivers whose stories are not told.

Firefly 870 LED Protoype pairs 870 wind switches with 870 super-bright white LEDs to form an 8\’ x 8\’ grid. As the wind blows over the piece, the wind switches trigger each LED individually, creating a stunning sparking effect in response to the wind. If every LED were to turn on, the entire piece would consume as much electricity as a single 60-Watt light bulb.

Patent Pending.

Aural Aura is a video and sound installation/performance that visualizes resonances generated by body gestures using sensors mapped to key energy points of the body to trigger sound and color. The project aspires to enhance energy management using specific frequencies and corresponding colors, triggered by active and/or passive bodily movements based on the Shaolin 18 Lohan hands, the fundamental chi Kung exercises used for meditation since 527 BCE in China.

CLUB DREAM VACATION

By Donna Cameron, 2009 ITP Thesis Candidate in computer and web technology, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.

Abstract: The virtual vacation club, \”Club Dream Vacation\”, is an education project which supports using Google Maps, Google Earth and Google Docs to create an imaginary dream vacation in the public school classroom/ computer lab. Club Dream Vacation uses the free Google web ware to promote a better understanding of the Earth and it\’s geography, of the ancient art of maps and mapmaking, of the Earth and its diversity of communities, of the Earth and a shared experience in the community of the participants. I hope that, through this, the importance of technical literacy will become a priority in our schools. Club Dream Vacation is a new project designed to improve geography and social science skills of children in the classroom, K-5. The project is run in a school computer lab, possibly as a geography lesson or a social studies lesson. The Project Director is Donna Cameron, faculty, NYU TSOA Special Programs. The project advocates teaching children in this context about the web, the earth’s geography, geagraphy itself as the study of humanity to the earth and life on earth, their own dreams as earthlings, their future and present selves. It asks participants to plan a virtual vacation in several well-defined sessions of 1 hour each, and is designed to be tailored to meet the needs of the particular school in which it is run. Unlike many computer lab projects, it advocates making a product- a vacation scrapbook in this case- and downloading it from Google Docs upon completion. This gives a student the potential to share at home, with mom and dad, and amongst themselves in the classroom or the lab. In this way, it promotes technology literacy and inter and intra generation communication with new technology and consumer web browser tools.

Taxis and expensive and inefficient when you ride alone. KOKUA lets you find other people, making similar trips, at the same time, so you can share the ride, share the cost, and reduce your carbon footprint!

My thesis is innovating a new process for creating a volumetric display and developing compelling content for it. The Lumarca is a truly volumetric display which allows viewers to see 3 dimensional images. The system requires only a computer, a projector, and common materials found at most hardware stores. This provides an affordable platform for artists to design compelling content that conveys information, narrative, and aesthetic information in a new way. I\’ve developed several dynamic and interactive pieces and games.
