OTE is a lo-fi mini-game made in p5 in which the user uses their hand+webcam to protect an alien named OTE on planet Earf from bad weather.

Description

OTE is a project created in 2020 by Elijah Alvarez and Matthew Li. OTE is a video game created in p5.js that tells the story of OTE, an alien who lives alone on planet Earf. The user interacts with the video game via their webcam and the ml5 Handpose model. The model tracks the users hand, which they use to control a hand that floats above OTE. The objective is for the user to use the floating sky hand to protect OTE from bad weather.

​The concept for OTE came from our idea to do a reverse take on the choose your own adventure form of storytelling. Instead of controlling a character in an external world, we decided to have the user control the external world which affects a character with free will. After learning the backstory of OTE, with enough empathy, the user should feel some responsibility to protect OTE as long as possible.

Description

This is my semester-long project of my Fall 2020 at ITP, which involves a bunch of eye symbols and graphics, expressing the theme: Looking for a witness of life. Inspired by Katy Perry’s 5th studio album , a underestimated pop records that kept me being alive, got me thinking in depth, and stimulating my souls and energy.

I deconstructed, and restructured the storyline and meaning of each track in this album, collected the lyrics that resonated with me, and visualized them in different forms such as Unity animation, video and audio, projection mapping, installation and graphic art. It was not that easy to show the sincerity and intimacy, not even to mention transferring those memories, emotions and feelings, into programming visual language, physical interactions and fabrications.

Those works speak for me, and by that I want to open more potential connections and communications in the future. Not only the connection to the others who can be your side and ride the journey with you, but also to the self.

Aside from the visual composition, I bring more personalities, narratives, and intimacy into it by etching my own monologue into the piece. Visit the project website for more details about SEEN.

Mulan

Did Mulan even confused about who she really is? Is she a daughter, a wife of someone, or a warrior, a soldier of herself.

Description

Because of Mulan‘s bravery and her great achievements in the war, she won the emperor‘s highest award. She has two choices now, one is to return to the life of a normal girl, to marry someone, to become a wife, a mother. The other is to be a female general. She is hesitating between these two choices, so she dives into her unconsciousness and listens to the truest voice in her heart.

In this story, Mulan will see her own life story from a third person's view. From when she decided to take her father's place in the conscription army, to her came back from the war and got the emperor's highest honor. By going through these memories, Mulan realized she had already made the decision deep in her heart.

This is a loop journey. Every time Mulan successfully collects all memories clips from one room, she will be sent back to the start room. After complete her journey in all three rooms, Mulan then goes through the fourth door to go back to the real world.
