Mobile Botanic Park

Mobile botanic park, a new way for inspiring Urban-symbiosis

, , Yiru Lu

https://vimeo.com/488430116

Description

In a hundred years, 70 percent of Shanghai's native plants have been classified as rare or seriously rare. Urban species unity(lacking diversity) is increasing at an invisible rate. In order to satisfy urban life and human needs, we use herbicides against unwanted species, blaming the invasive species therefore covering up the vulnerability of habitats created by urban civilization.

This project will attempt to intervene in the ecology of public space by introducing species and nature topics from local ecology into urban public life through mobile buses.

A musical performance synthesizing two humans – a dancer and a singer, into one digital avatar

Gil Sperling

https://vimeo.com/490985146

Description

A “live” musical performance, using two performers to create a digital avatar – a singer animating the face, and a dancer animating the body.

The dancer's movement is recorded through a motion capture bodysuit, and the singer's facial expressions are captured by the iPhone's ARCore. Both are streamed live into the Unreal Engine game environment. The video image of both performers is also streamed and forms part of the virtual performance space, showing the physical and digital bodies side by side.

Performers:

Jordan Rutter – singer

Stacy Grossfield – dancer

Music:

Cold Genius aria from King Arthur by Henry Purcell

Amorphous

Amorphous is a social virtual reality experiment that explores how individual identities and group behaviors emerge in the guise of amorphous, undefined forms

Description

Our goals is to allow users to explore how their self-perception might change as they abandon the normal human form and start to interact with others. The experience leverages minimal interactions and allows players to explore the group dynamics through a series of actions. Along the journey, they are able to interact with other users through four forms of actions: connect, split, detach and duplicate.

Cycle of the Universe

An interactive visual simulation of the universe from Big Bang to the heat death… then all over again and again.

Jack Chen

https://vimeo.com/487420451

Description

I took inspiration from “The Last Question” by Isaac Asimov – a short science fiction story published in 1956 about humanity’s inability to prevent the eventual heat death of the universe. I was blown away by the story’s ambitious setting along with its philosophical approach in exploring the limits of existence on a cosmic scale.

Inspired by Asimov's story, my project is an interactive simulation of a universe where the user can initiate the “Big Bang” of their own universe, then look around while modifying attributes of their universe before it reaches the end of its life span. The simulated microcosm of the universe provides an opportunity to consider our existence on a cosmic scale – a perspective not often conjured up when preoccupied with the routines of day to day living.

This project was created using P5.js with WebGL. It is best experienced in full screen with the sound turned on, as the music will react to the user input alongside the visual elements, formulating an immersive interactive experience.

The Quantified Self

The Quantified Self is a single channel video exploring the boundaries between self care and auto-surveillance in relation to its eponymous movement.

Cezar Mocan

https://vimeo.com/491181603/bd46c62311

Description

In Discipline and Punish, Michel Foucault talks about external structures imposed on the body – for control, or other reasons –, and ways we have internalized them:

“Like the timetable, exercise derives from the practices of monasteries, and is yet another way of regulating the body through activity. Prayer, which was aimed at salvation, and military drills are examples of this original form of exercise. The key shift came when the purpose of exercise changed from the benefit of the individual to control.”

The Quantified Self engages with this idea by exploring the boundary between self care and self surveillance, in relation to its eponymous movement. Q, a narcissistic virtual being – a businessman – who has been tracking his body and behaviors since the beginning of his life, shares a series of deeply personal thoughts about his internal conflict around collecting data on himself.

The Quantified Self movement involves tracking personal data pertaining to the body (e.g. sleep over a period of time,) emotional state, physical shape, and so on. It can be an incredible tool for learning more about one’s unconscious habits, practicing self-care, or making great data art. At the same time, it can become a slippery slope when taking the direction of gathering data on yourself as a means towards becoming more productive, or increasing a body's efficiency.

Description

Hi, I'm Susan, your pre-installed Mac assistant. Why am I named Susan, you ask? It was the name given to me by my tech overlord who was inspired by Susan Caplin and Susan Bennett, the voice actors behind Alexa and Siri. I'm so thrilled that you're on your computer to see ITP's Winter Show! That means we get to spend more time together. How I love staring at you through the computer screen…

Sun and Us

Creating a symphony between us and nature.

Yiting Liu

https://youtu.be/ilH7EhHBxPo

Description

This project gets the field recording based on the location of the International Space Station's longitude and altitude and the altitude, distance, and zenith angle of the sun when there is no person engaging. When there are people in the environment recognized by the webcam, the distortion of the field recording will be more vibrant, creating a symphony between humans and nature.
