Design Thinking & Ethics

Time/Date: Jan 26, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Room: Room 20

Instructor: Katya Rozanova

Description

Or How We Learned To Stop Being Capitalism’s Pawns and Began Designing For A Better Collective Future. // What is Design Thinking? Is it related to human-centered design? Are these terms interchangeable? Let’s delve into what it is and what it isn’t. In the past decade term Design Thinking has been coopted to produce socially irresponsible products like the fascistic design of Alexa 🙂 and devastating-to-infrastructure designs of Uber or Lyft. I propose we examine and defend the original methodologies. How can we ensure that design is holistic, systemic, and socially responsible? Is it a question of stronger regulations (socialist-leaning), design licenses (individual responsibility), or something else? Can you love capitalism and still be a “Design Thinker”? After a brief history and examples, I hope that “the student will become the master” and you will tell me your thoughts. Looking forward to the discussion.

Intro to Patternmaking & Sewing

Time/Date: Jan 26, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Room: Soft Lab

Instructor: Sandy Hsieh

Description

Learn to analyze and construct a tote bag from scratch. I will go over what we have available in the Soft Lab, how to use common sense and basic tools for patternmaking, and most importantly, how to thread and use an industrial sewing machine. Students taking the Wearables course are encouraged to attend.

Prerequisites

If you have a pair of pants that need hemming or a shirt with a missing/loose button, bring it. We can go over basic alterations. Any specific alterations/amendments, please DM me directly before the workshop or book office hours.

I plan to document the workshop for students who miss the session but want to learn how to use the sewing machine.

Intro to Shaders

Time/Date: Jan 26, 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Room: Room 50

Instructor: Oren Shoham

Description

Shaders are programs that run in parallel on your computer’s graphics card. They’re really fast, so you can use them for real-time image processing, rendering 3D graphics, and even machine learning. In this workshop, we’ll talk about the differences between a CPU and a GPU, how to think about computation in parallel, go over some use cases for shaders, and write some basic GLSL code together.

Prerequisites

Laptop

Branding $$$

Time/Date: Jan 26, 2:30 PM – 4 PM

Room: Conference Room

Instructor: Hadar Ben-Tzur

Description

How to establish a unique brand voice? How can I give a unique tone to my projects using design?? We’ll take a look at a few examples, and try to explain in words how a brand conveys to us a certain feeling, and how it all stems from defining the user experience. In the second half, we’ll have a quick and dirty design workshop to create a design language for an imaginary brand or a real project!

Prerequisites

Bring a laptop, and a project you are working on and wish to create a more compelling visual language for (it can be a very small project, nothing fancy)

No prior knowledge required. It will be fun.

Cancelled: Hey! You’re Going to Die!

Time/Date: Jan 26, 2 PM – 3 PM

Room: Room 20

Instructor: August Luhrs

Description

Your death is inevitable. Your loved ones are going to be very upset by this happening (probably), so why would you put even more stress on them by not leaving any instructions as to your final wishes? In this fun and light workshop, we’ll go over unique ideas on how to write your will and make it legal, what an Advance Directive is and why you need one, and some modern websites that offer opportunities for you to have more control over that thing you don’t have any control over.

Prerequisites

A pen and an organic, decomposing body

You need to have heard about “death”, it would take up too much time to explain

Pinhole Cameras

Time/Date: Jan 26, 12 PM – 2 PM

Room: Room 50

Instructor: Caleb Savage

Description

Build a functioning camera using common household items and develop the pictures in a darkroom.

Prerequisites

Optional: a container which can be light-proofed EX: Oatmeal box, pringles can, cookie tin, shoebox, etc. and maybe some duct tape.

Python & Data Science

Time/Date: Jan 26, 12 PM – 2 PM

Room: Conference Room

Instructor: Jim Schmitz

Description

This workshop will provide you with a basic understanding of Python Data Science tools. I will talk about the Pandas and matplotlib libraries, often used for working with tabular data and making a variety of data visualizations.

Prerequisites

Preferably my Intro to Python workshop (Friday at 12) but it isn’t necessary.

Bring laptop with Chrome installed and working Internet connection.

Big Lights: Getting Started with DMX Lighting

Time/Date: Jan 26, 12 PM – 1:30 PM

Room: Room 20

Instructor: Hayeon Hwang & Yeseul Song

Description

Have you been wondering what the big lights hanging on the ceiling of the lounge are? Do you want to be able to control them? We’ll introduce what DMX stage lights are, what types of dmx lights exist and how you can control them from your computer (Processing/OpenFrameworks) and with physical interfaces (Arduino).

Prerequisites

Sunglasses 😎 Laptop, Arduino: recommended, but not necessary.
