Invisible Cities

Alejandro Puentes Amezquita, Yiyang Liang

Sculpting text into a city.

http://itping.wordpress.com/scupting-data-into-everyday-objects/

Description

Cities are alive. They are vessels for people’s thoughts and emotions. Unlike cities, city models tend to be cold and technical. We are aiming to fabricate a city model full of life and expression. A model that can express the emotions that we experienced when reading the book through a changing atmosphere. Sadness can be rain, anger can be a thunder and happiness can be a sunny day. It is a conceptual project about adding behaviors and interactivity to architectural representations.

The installation consists of two parts. The first one is the actual model, a static representation of an imaginary data-generated city. We are using natural language processing, sentiment analysis and urban design techniques to produce a 3D printed miniature of a city inspired by Italo Calvino’s book “Invisible Cities.” The second part is about creating an interactive atmosphere that responds to human emotions. Using the Pepper's Ghost technique—an illusion from theater, light and sound, we generate different atmospheres that respond to the mood of the authors when reading the book. It is a theatrical dialogue between users and an Calvino's book, using the city model as media to express emotions.

Centrality

Aankit Patel

Procedural poetry that invites the reader to take a more intuitive approach to 'meaning'.

http://www.aantiks.com/centrality/

Description

Meaning often lies in seemingly random events, in the chaos and messiness of life. Yet when we read, we try to get at the meaning by digging deeper, getting to the core or the center of the author's message.

Centrality uses the Wordnet lexicographical corpus, the dadaist cut-up technique, and Jabberwocky-esque nonsense to write a poem modeling the meaning of a single user-inputted verb. Using the very common statistical measure of centrality, the normal distribution, the poems juxtapose difference usages or senses of the verb with each other and nonsense. The effect hopefully invites the reader to treat text and language more intuitively, allowing context instead of deterministic definitions guide their understanding.

Hands

Ken Amarit

A music composition based video game where you can only die by winning.

http://www.ohmy.me/hands

Description

Hands is a music composition and video game. Layers of music are procedurally generated and played on top of each other as the game progresses, and it's your job to avoid the incoming hands. The song builds over the course of the game, but each time you're hit by a hand a layer of the song stops playing. Stay alive long enough to play the entire song and you'll be rewarded with death.

Hands is also an arcade machine installation/interface that I am building to play the game made from felt, wood, and arcade joysticks. It's a small standing pedestal with 2 joysticks that lets you play the game either with 1 player or 2 players. It will stand to be around 3'-4' tall and about 2' wide. It is a very non-traditional arcade machine.

http://yourfriendtk.wordpress.com/2014/03/21/listening-through-touch/

Description

A crown-like wearable (hopefully with more style options by the 19th) with small vibratory motors that transform audio directly out of a computer, ipod or stereo into a rhythmic sensation directly related to the audio. It can be as relaxing or as intense as you want and works on any audio and can be accompanied with video or other sensory input.

Rabbit Hole

Laura Juo-Hsin Chen

An emotion exploration wondering game.

http://rabbit-hole-game.tumblr.com/

Description

“Are you down the rabbit hole now? How do you feel?”

“Eager to get out or enjoying the sweetness and bitterness down there?”

It's a multiple layers and self-explained game, and based on the assumption that “Everyone is sort of down in their rabbit hole.”, it intends to explore and evoke the emotion of player being on the conceptual path that is infinitesimally deep and complex, and venturing too far down is probably not that great of an idea.
