Description

This piece was inspired by many art pieces of self-portraits as well as CHANEL's mobile art project by Zaha Hadid. I'd like to explore the novel utilization of p5 and utilize it as a tool for self-exploration and expression. I state one of my recent idea of becoming an astronaut in the project. Meanwhile, doubting the existence of the idea, regarding it as being put a fish tank on my head. I used the posenet to trigger the transition between different scenarios. I would definitely try to extend the story by adding more scenarios and my ideas in the future.

A careful observation during the COVID-19 period.

Chenle Li

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xPHY52kWFdav9arWQz-4Qvpe1yffx0t4/view?usp=sharing

Description

The project investigates the firm position held by a certain group of Chinese people during the COVID-19 spreading period and intended to show people’s attitudes toward artifacts.

The project has two parts: Weibo and a photo journal. The Weibo, also named MicroBlog, is one of the most common social media sharing platforms in China, the artifact was published on Weibo which shows the firm position held by some Chinese people during the outbreak of coronavirus through the release of a Chinese citizen's microblog in the outbreak. The publisher is one of the main supporters and distributors of the conspiracy theory of coronavirus; The second artifact is a photo journal of an escaped convict who traveled from Hunan to Henan during the outbreak of coronavirus after ransacking a gold store. The convict is extremely cautious and has a high anti-detection capability. After burying the gold in the countryside of Henan province, the convict returned to Hunan through the highway on bicycles, he was armed to the teeth.

By combining the two artifacts together, the project was intended to show how wrath and greed were revealed during the COVID-19 spreading period. The boundaries between the fictional and the real are blurred.

The Inside World of a Smoker

This is a tiny story originated from an ordinary life, unfolding as a stream of consciousness

Yuntong Dai

https://s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com/ima.nyu.edu/commlab/moon/hazel-dai/index.html

Description

This is a documentary project from the communications lab. It is very mini, and the users can explore the webpage with easy interactions. The main concept is to know about a smoker's life-story, anxiety, and childhood. The mini-documentary is shot with iPhone 11 pro, and the style is diverse but uniformed meanwhile. You can see some elements from the old-fashioned silent movie and even some messy hand-writings! However, the main point here is not trying to tell a wholesome story. Instead, the story is unfolded as a stream of consciousness. Just imagine you've entered the smoker's brain, and explore a tiny part of his complicated yet typical life. Moreover, the concept of “mood” is there, all the way through the whole project. The interactive way may be a bit simple, but please enjoy the videos as well!

台北夢Taipei Dreams

Erase for new interpretation, 台北夢Taipei Dreams is an interactive website that contains more than 50 erased stories of people who have come to Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

s

https://vimeo.com/418902703

Description

Entering, assimilating, and then reinterpreting, the experience of accommodating to a new city is conceptually aligned with both the technical and poetic process of erasure poetry—a text being encountered, read, and eventually “erased” in forming new interpretations of an existing narrative. Taipei is like no others, but as one index city seems to entail a common metropolitan theme built up with the burdens of people’s ambitions and aspirations on a scale of different visibilities. These stories of “dreams” come from mostly university students/graduates around my age who have moved to Taipei for work or study. With a lot of comparings and imitations in the highly competitive environment, it seems like many are subconsciously living out the stereotypes of what they expected people in Taipei would be like. Perhaps, the biggest stereotype is that Taipei is an absolute place of dream-come-true as they first entered in their own processes of wayfinding, where “dreams” are in fact very much overlapped. The diverse yet homogenized complexity of these stories have to deal with the dynamic between collectivism and individualism. Each story is of one unique person, but comes together as one.

Taking the form of erasure poetry as part of the social practice of this project, I hope to explore the dynamic from a personal perspective. By translating and erasing others’ stories whose original texts were in Traditional Chinese, I have entered a virtual space of the city of embedded dreams, and finding my very own reinterpreted from others’ real life endeavors. The website not only provides a freely explorative experience, but a collection of city experiences, which does not have the magic to achieve one’s dreams, but through interactive engagements invites people to reflect on their own encounters. Through 台北夢, we could be closer to our dreams.
