SEEN

I see and I exist, no fears to be naked, no absolutes in black and white.

Zhuolin Wu

Description

This is my semester-long project of my Fall 2020 at ITP, which involves a bunch of eye symbols and graphics, expressing the theme: Looking for a witness of life. Inspired by Katy Perry’s 5th studio album , a underestimated pop records that kept me being alive, got me thinking in depth, and stimulating my souls and energy.

I deconstructed, and restructured the storyline and meaning of each track in this album, collected the lyrics that resonated with me, and visualized them in different forms such as Unity animation, video and audio, projection mapping, installation and graphic art. It was not that easy to show the sincerity and intimacy, not even to mention transferring those memories, emotions and feelings, into programming visual language, physical interactions and fabrications.

Those works speak for me, and by that I want to open more potential connections and communications in the future. Not only the connection to the others who can be your side and ride the journey with you, but also to the self.

Aside from the visual composition, I bring more personalities, narratives, and intimacy into it by etching my own monologue into the piece. Visit the project website for more details about SEEN.

Surf Wave Visualization

Collecting, graphing, and producing a physical construction of wave acceleration surfed in the Rockaways, Queens.

Alan Winslow

https://youtu.be/zpgQ6j7HD5E

Description

For this piece, I attached a circuit measuring and recording acceleration in my wetsuit and brought out to the beach for a surf session. The resulting data was graphed, and the waves surfed were separated from the other data. The wave data was then turned into a vector to be laser cut in acrylic for the final pieces.

Leaf Dance

The shadows of plants are dancing in the wind.

Siyuan Zan

https://youtu.be/SnFboZt_c9E

Description

I inspired by the reflection of plants reflected on the curtains on a bright afternoon. They are swaying with the wind according to the wind speed which seem to be swaying with the melody. The color of the reflection will change according to the plant itself and the light. So for this light installation,I try to use weather data to create a light and shadow experience that the shadows of plants are dancing in the wind.
I will use the real-time wind data in the weather station to drive the gear motor to control the speed and direction of the motor. At the same time, I use led rings as the light source, and simulate the visual effect of the swaying and dancing of the plants through the rotation and distortion of the special shape of the diffusive material.

Weather Journals

Weather Journals uses data visualization and machine learning to put people in touch with their surroundings and with each other.

Schuyler DeVos

https://youtu.be/gm49Qnp8RBg

Description

Weather Journals is an attempt to put people in touch with their surroundings and with each other. The whole thing is powered by OpenAI's GPT2 algorithm, which is a machine learning algorithm that generates human-like text.

First, submit a reflection of the weather where you are in the box on the top left. This can be whatever you want: what do the clouds look like? How does the weather make you feel? Does it remind you of another time?

After you've put in your reflection, adjust the length and the creativity of the text you'd like the weather to write you in return. Then hit the button and wait.

At the end of the day, everything that everyone has written for that day is used to train the machine learning model. What that means is that every day into the future, the model reflects all the reflections of all the days before it, growing and evolving with the weather.

3D_land

A 3D video chat experience to interact and explore virtual spaces with others.

Jake Sherwood

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o45ApWF5CpE&feature=youtu.be

Description

Much of our post Covid19 life is now spent online in video conference settings.

How can we make those experiences more exciting and engaging?

3D_land is an exploration of webrtc, peer2peer, and threejs technologies and how they can be used to create a more exciting video chat experience.

Can this template be used for more engaging remote learning?

Can it be used for video conferencing?

Or is it just a place to explore with friends?

3D_land sets you in the world of a 3D space island. Participants can explore the world on their own or converse and explore with each other.

They can change their appearance by applying various video filters.

Proximity to other participants allow for improved audio and allow participants to “tattoo” or give gif gifts to other nearby participates.

Pixel Topographies

Pixel Topographies uses machine learning to generate elevation maps based on Connecticut topography, then creates a tangible 3D representation of that data.

Philip Cadoux

https://vimeo.com/488813688

Description

My family sold the house I grew up in this year, which was very sudden, but for the best. I had never really been that connected to my home state, but when I discovered I may never go back there, I realized that I had come to really appreciate it as a place to grow up. We ended up renting a house not too far from where I grew up to get through the pandemic, but it made me think about what it was that caused me to become so nostalgic. What kept popping into my head was that it is a beautiful place. It has lovely forests, beautiful colors, coastal towns, and even a few mountains. Then, I stumbled across a site which shows the elevation in CT using colors.

This inspired me, I created an ElevationGAN and used Runway's hostel model feature to grab the images generated. I then used p5.js to process down the images into a pixel grid. From there, I used serial communication to send the elevation data to an Arduino, which actuated pixels in and out to reflect these values. This is a proof of concept piece that could be scaled up to create 1:1 representations of elevation maps – ultimately creating wooden topographies. I have plans to elaborate on this ML model and try new things.

Equilibrium

Find the inner peace and present it physically by sound and light

Jezzy Zheng Lu

https://vimeo.com/491142330

Description

Equilibrium is a light and sound sculpture, using glass beads as the main medium to change light and sound through human breathing. Equilibrium is an experience and a self introspective journey. It invites the audience to take some time to get back in touch with themselves.

The interaction is as follow: First the FSR that is under the rug senses when a person sits down and keeps still, the time of flight sensor starts to detect the person’s breathing frequency by detecting the person’s chest fluctuations. The time of flight sensor picks up different distances within a given threshold between insufflation and inspiration, and this frequency is mapped into the range of LED and vibration motor, to change the brightness and vibration frequency. Different amplitude values cause the glass bead to change position, thereby changing the light path and creating sound through friction. Simultaneously, the servo continues to perform regular movements of up and down, allowing the glass beads to fall from a high place to a low place; repeating this process continuously, it produces a sound similar to wind/rain in nature. This white noise quality of the sound helps audiences gradually gain inner peace. On one hand, Equilibrium attempts to visualize the subtle change of human consciousness, giving it physical properties, from intangible to tangible. On the contrary, the attributes of light and sound are relatively abstract comparing to concrete objects.

Equilibrium's entire device is also pursuing a balance, whether it is the teeter-totter structure that keeps repetitive motion or the continuous and stable state of brightness and amplitude with the steady flow of human breathing.

Hurt was always accumulated little by little until it became permanently incurable.

Description

The project title “ ” is blank, meaning something was existed but hidden and missing at some point in time. In this piece, I recall my memory and choose an object—classroom locker—which is traumatic for me when I was in senior school.I created a black box which has the similar shape with classroom locker and put paper and stepper motor inside. I try to concern about the mental state and emotion when people experienced repressive and despairing moments, expressing the feelings that the hurt was always accumulated little by little until it became permanently incurable. Paper is fragile, floundering and easy to be distorted and broken, as well as human beings.
