Moving Portraits

Rose Meacham

Moving Portraits is a video series that documents the subtle facial gestures that express internal emotional states. Fusing art and scientific practices, video portraits of the six universal emotions were recorded and analyzed quantitatively.

http://thesis.itp.io/students/rsm397

Description

Psychological research has classified six facial expressions that correspond to distinct universal emotions: disgust, sadness, happiness, fear, anger, and surprise. But do we truly understand how to interpret these internal states in other people? And is it possible for a computer to use predictive algorithms to determine emotions in humans? In an effort to explore these question, I generated a series of slow motion video portraits documenting the detailed gestures and physiological states of subjects responding to emotional stimuli. A classification tool and library of quantified emotions was used to analyze the subjects' movements and train neural networks to identify the motions indicating specific internal states.

Fictioning, or The Confession of the Librarian

Donna Miller Watts

Borges "The Library of Babel" adapted to Oculus Rift, with some critical seasoning along the way.

http://dont.have.yet

Description

3D animation for Oculus Rift of “The Library of Babel” using Three.js and WebGL. Like stereoscopes of the past, and in some ways, books, the Oculus Rift may provide a private narrative experience of the “real”, enhanced with the “feel” of 3D. I chose this Borges story because it describes an unreal landscape, and as such, provides fertile ground for me to challenge ideas of the “right” kind of content for “realifying” technologies.

Wrap Genius

Sam Slover

Wrap Genius is a new Web and mobile food labeling framework that gives people a more personalized look into their food.

http://www.wrapgenius.me/

Description

The food we buy matters. As our food systems become increasingly complex, the food we choose to consume affects not only our own health, but also the environment, our ethical framework, the Earth's biodiversity, and so much more. But much of the data of our food purchases remains opaque to us as end consumers. This isn’t good enough. So, I went on a mission to come up with something better. For 12 weeks, I carefully tracked all of my grocery purchases and created a new visual framework to better understand it all. Where does my food come from? What are my healthiest and unhealthiest choices? Which foods have GMOs? I created a Web and mobile dashboard that shows me all of this information and more. It's my dream food label, designed for the interests of consumers.

White Box Communications

Pia Zaragoza

White Box Emergency Communications is a radio-based emergency communications system that is accessible, affordable, and easy to use that can be deployed when modern communication methods are down during a disaster.

www.pzaragoza.net/whitebox

Description

Modern communication methods rely heavily on cell phone towers and internet connections, which, during disasters are either offline or reserved for emergency response and disaster management. How can survivors communicate their location and get the supplies they need? White Box Emergency Communications aims to solve this problem by repurposing an existing protocol, automatic packet reporting system (APRS), developed by the amateur radio community for emergency communications. By making APRS more accessible, affordable, and easy to use, it allows responders to see status updates, view GPS coordinates, and communicate independently with survivors via this long-established wireless technology.
