This is an interactive documentary about what a university student does and thinks on the first day going back to school during the pandemic.

Description

My original idea was a bit different from this final version of the story. Earlier before I decided what to make, I was on a bus. An elderly first got on the bus not wearing a mask. Suddenly the driver halted and switched off the car. Other passengers, together with the driver, loudly scolded him of getting abroad like this and jeopardizing everyone else’s health. Two stops later a big, young man got up, wearing his mask on his jaw, eating an omelet as breakfast, and never got his mask back on after he sat down. Nobody said a thing. So, at first, I wanted to make a project that shows how people act in a post-pandemic period, in which part of them thinks we’ve already past the panicking, while the other part is still on guard against others from the epidemic perspective. But over time, I added more personal experience into it and made it more of a diary and less of a real documentary.

A comic project adapted from a Jian Liu animation movie named “Have a Nice Day!”

Description

I adapt the Liu Jian work into a kind of role play. Readers will first go through some overview scenes and a poem written by Leo Tolstyo, getting a sense of the social background where this story takes place (around 2000 in a south-eastern small city in China). Then readers will go to a choice page, where they can choose any one of the three main characters to begin. Upon choosing, they will only be able to see what is happening around the character they choose and see what the character can see. After they finish the plot with one character, they can go on to choose see another character or directly jump to the ending part. After they have chosen all the three characters to read, they will get a sense of the truth. The ending part is some scenes indicating how the story ends. And some texts from the Bible is quoted, while the lyrics of the song “Lullaby” sung by “The Cure” is shown upon the pictures.

By do such a role play style project, I hope readers can not only learn about how the complete story is but can taste and feel the tough situation each character is faced with and try to understand what they really think when they make decisions and moves.

Description

In China, the college entrance examination is very important, and this exam has been controversial all the time because on one hand it is so cruel but on the other hand there is no other better way to replace it, yet. My personal experience of the last several months before the exam was stressful, so I wonder other students’ feelings about their life in senior three. Also, during this special time, their experience is unique.

Steamed Hams™ but it's a psychological thriller, with an adjustable madness meter.

Qingyu Peng

comic Steamed Hams title page
http://imanas.shanghai.nyu.edu/~qp274/comic/

Description

This interactive comic allows users to adjust the madness of the story as the story goes. Since the “madness” of each panel is adjustable, it provides readers with a total of 16 different storylines with 4 major themes. It plays with the grammar of comics by altering the captions, speech bubbles and image details.

Delirious Steamed Hams is a parody inspired by parodies. It's a product of mixing together stuff that I love. It is weird and sketchy, but I had fun making and memeing. Hope you find it funny too.

To enter the next panel, click the red arrow. Upon viewing each panel, the user has a chance to drag the slider and then the panel will be refreshed corresponding to the “madness meter”.

Description

The theme I choose for my project is Mom’s Qingming Mochi. In this project, I try to incorporate both cultural and personal aspects. Qingming Mochi is a typical Chinese snack, especially popular in the region where I live. It’s also very meaningful to me because my mom always makes me Qingming Mochi when I was small. I want to build a both informational, aesthetic, and interesting experience for my users. With this idea in mind, I developed mom’s secret recipe part to let my users have a taste of what Qingming Mochi is made of. I also build the choosing ingredient mini-game to make my project more fun. Moreover, I shoot the videos in an aesthetic way to create an artistic environment. What’s worth noticing is that almost all my background music comes from the famous documentary A Bite of China. I hope that it can create a similar atmosphere as the documentary being cultural and absorbing.

Description

Hogwarts April Report is a data story about Harry Potter Fanfictions during April 2020. The subject of my final project is “Harry Potter Fanfictions”. In the era of the internet, the fanfictions community demonstrates great growth potential. In this interactive data visualization project, based on the most recent month HP fanfictions, I will demonstrate some aspects of HP fanfictions such as relationships, parings, fandoms, and imaginations. I design the website as an online monthly newspaper, it might be more interesting than the pure data analysis.

Old image of Shanghai

Longchang Department
http://imanas.shanghai.nyu.edu/~qy648/documentary/index.html

Description

My concept is about the story of old Shanghai. The inspiration of this project is from the documentary Manufactured Landscape where it portraits the image of modern Shanghai. So I want to show a very different image of Shanghai, which may have gradually been forgotten by people, an old, densely-populated, but full of warmth and tranquility. When we think about developments, we always it is a beneficial word, it represents advance, better quality and so on. But is it true that it is one hundred percent good? Will it also lose something valuable? For me personally, the answer is yes. The development of high buildings blocks the close relationships between neighbors; the fast-paced city life pushes us to always go on and never stop to enjoy the serenity. It is due to these reasons that I want to shoot the life in old Shanghai and also give myself a chance to be more familiar with it.
