Purell Wonderland

Purell Wonderland is an organic virtual place designed for making fun of social or behavioral responses to coronavirus.

Dan Qi Qian

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Az2XIGQRQ7A&feature=youtu.be

Description

Purell Wonderland is designed in a time when quarantine first started, and our social behavior was just being deployed to assuage fears, understand risk, improve public health and implement social distancing strategies.

For the designer herself, she got bored for staying at her room in the first 2 weeks in the quarantine, and was touched by new-born flowers once she went out for a walk. She believes we all have some connections with the nature and that matters.

That's why she designed a place where provides exposure to a virtual nature and humor to help ease coronavirus anxiety. The landscape is shaped with graphical lines into the look of hand sanitizer, an essential object in current social environment, but it's hard to recognize until you reach to a higher place.

Description

A Conversation is an online experiment orchestrated to explore vulnerability among strangers in the digital realm. You will be assigned a pseudonym and paired up with a stranger in one of three chatrooms. Everything said in each chatroom is visible to each of the other chatrooms. As you converse with your partner, we urge you to ask yourself: what compels you to keep a conversation going? How honest do you want to be? And how would you like to portray yourself given that you are anonymous?

Each session at most can host 6 players; all others become observers.

Art Memory Game

Memorize the given drawing and try to draw a replica!

Christina Chung, Jessica Lu, Sam Zheng

https://youtu.be/PThGOG_Y1u8

Description

This project is created to be competitive yet enjoyable online game. The art-memory game is designed to be a simple memorization and to step up its level if the user is interested in continuing the game. This game is made up of simple shapes: ellipses and rectangles and the user is given thirty seconds to memorize the position of these shapes. We have designed for this game, the shapes' position will be restricted to the left hand canvas. In addition, the shapes will have different size, but all of them are the same color. After thirty seconds is up, the left-hand canvas will be “hidden” and the user will be given sixty seconds to re-draw these shapes, on the right hand of the white canvas by dragging the mouse. When dragging the mouse the given output is red, the color, therefore, the user does not need to worry about changing ink color and the size of the brush. We have also designed that for the user's interaction with mouse drag to be restricted to the right hand canvas. If the user does drag the mouse outside the canvas, the red ink will not be displayed. After sixty seconds is up, the user can compare their drawing to the given drawing. If the user would like to play again, he/she can press the play again feature. However, the point for the play again feature is that the amount of shapes are increased, with still thirty seconds to memorize and sixty seconds to re-draw it.

Music Harry

A casual game to explore more about music

Yudi Jia

https://youtu.be/_PxYbcnqwKI

Description

This project is an interactive game to help amateurs learn more about music in an interactive and interesting way. Many music lovers want to further explore the world of music, such as composing their own songs and making musical accompaniments and arrangements but are restricted by their limited knowledge of basic music theory. However, existing traditional music theory classes are not that playful and interactive, and also need a long time to learn. Other musical apps imitating the piano/guitar interfaces only allow users to get a sense of one instrument. Thus, to help users learn and explore music in an interesting way, this project will illustrate music elements vividly using cartoon-like interface and characters. It is not gamification learning, it is a game which hopefully can let players know more about musical elements during their leisure time. While gamification learning focuses more on how to design the learning methods and material by imitating game mechanics, my project is purely a casual game which provides a bit of learning value.

This game is developed using Processing and p5.js, and imitates the interface of Super Mario so that users can quickly understand how to play the game. The notes and chords will be visualized as cartoon symbols or figures, floating in the air or moving on the ground. When the user captures the cartoon figures, musical knowledge will be displayed on the screen, and total scores will be updated each time the user interacts with the game characters. After playing this game, users will get a sense of musical notes (C,D,E,F,G,A,B), possible/popular chords that can be used in composing a music piece, and might also be able to design a chord progression for a set of melodies.

Extinction Party – Spring Show

An educational puzzle game that explores the history of life on Earth.

Topher Blair

https://vimeo.com/415729116

Description

What do you do when the world falls apart? Extinction Party is an educational puzzle game that explores the history of life on Earth by looking at the five major mass extinction events. It will take the form of a 3-foot high standing pentagon shape, with each side of the pentagon containing fun ways for participants to explore what life looked like before and after the extinction, and how why scientists think it happened in a certain way.

My thesis project is one side of this theoretical sculpture, which will be playable as a computer game. The game will be a proof of concept for a larger physical sculpture, which would be installed in a museum. I hope that both kids and adults will enjoy playing with it.
