The concept is to substantialize poetic Chinese painting with audios, and to recall the calmness from the pre-industrial age.

Description

.I built a place where visitors can relax and escape from the reality for a while, and also I want to enrich the already-exist art forms by giving them sounds. .This scene consists of mountains, valleys, houses, and rivers, representing ancient Chinese philosophy of “归隐”[hermitage]. Our ancestors suffered from the din and banality of officialdom, just like nowadays we are enduring urban noises. And we all want to escape to a far-away place, where there is no internet and no construction going on. This webpage enables visitors to immerse into this metaphoric space, being both a “visitor” and a “detective” to explore what might be going on in this painting.

Description

Our project aims to navigate users through our storyline using movements. The setting is the main character commited a suicide and are currently in the ocean. The user will be asked to swim to manipulate a dot with halo on the screen representing the spirit of the character on the brink of life and death. When hitting certain spots on the page, a new webpage will open and the users will be asked to learn some poses like shaking hands and laughing through a piece of memory from when she/he is still alive. After going through all the memory, in the ending page you will be asked to face yourself and use the poses you leared to get out of the sea.

Four stages of Sanyu, the Chinese Van Gogh's frustrated life

Haoyu Ding

Little elephant in wilderness
https://wp.nyu.edu/enatub/week-9-leon-ding-documentation-of-project-3-18th-apr/

Description

This project mainly shows four stages during the life of Sanyu, with “four seasons” as a metaphor. For those who may never hear about this name, Sanyu is kinda like a Chinese Van Gogh, who spent most of his life in poor and unappreciated condition, but still left lots of art pieces that have been given high credit to by posterity. The main purpose of this project is to share an experience from Sanyu’s life with the users. When you’re watching those paintings of his, you would also listen to audios that uncover his life and thus have a better understanding of his personality and what he’s undergone.

Description

This project was heavily inspired by my love of ASMR and a great need to get out of my house during quarantine. I wanted to create a project that brought together great visuals and soothing audio to take the participant's mind off of whatever may be weighing heavily on them. I this project I aimed for authenticity coupled with a relaxing atmosphere.

Perceive sound with different brain processing system and unique facial organizations.

Chun Song

Description

Wales' songs are so spaced out to hear that what sounds like a gigantic, drawn-out and endless moan is perhaps only one consonant to them. Similarly, a bird with a high-pitched and agitated sing may perceive us as we perceive the whales. It's difficult to perceive each other with one's constant time.

Between the limits of document and fiction, the project creates a semi-fictional narrative which simulates an extraterrestrial creature with different brain processing system and unique facial organizations. Human audiences can only try to understand what it hears with their limited cognition.

In this project, is a story that Ori and Naru (The two Characters) were brought to a dangerous place and they had to escape from that place and to find the paradise where they can stay safe (In the second Picture). The background sound of thunder and roar was simulating by me.And users and hover to the two characters to listen to their voices to find their mood at that time. When the scrolling down to the third picture, you will be very easily hover on the body of the great devil, and might be frightened by the sudden roar of the devil. But that’s one of my goal to make user realize that they have met a devil. In the fourth picture, the background music becomes harmonious, and there is an eagle flying by. The user can hover on the eagle to hear the sound of the eagle. In the last page, the two characters reach to the paradise successfully. Users can hover on the two characters to hear the change of their mood. And the final background music is echoing to the bgm in the first page. In the first page, there was only piano, and it was played and recorded by me. The bgm in the last page is the Game OST, which add some more elements including human voices.

A virtual soundscape that provides immersive spooky experience.

The entrance to the forest. The world under lake. The main part of the project - haunted forest. The spooky loop of the whole story.
https://s3.ap-east-1.amazonaws.com/ima.nyu.edu/commlab/moon/barry-wang/index.html

Description

In this project, I would like to create an imaginary space of a forest that sunk underneath a lake. The idea come from a game series called Rusty Lake. When I was playing that game, the horrifying feeling it brings generates great excitement to me. I aim to create such a forest so as to construct a spooky and horrifying space. This forest under the lake is set to be a place to empty one's mind and escape from reality. The purpose is to bring the users an immersive experience of mental stimulation, and also a of place for meditation and self-reflection, though in a bizarre way. In this project, multiple sound objects are applied, including some recorded sound, including some real forest and underwater sound. Besides artificial ones are also applied. The goal is to make this soundscape easily acceptable by the audience, while inspiring their imagination to think beyond the soundscape itself and come up with his or her on story that may happen behind it. To make the whole project more completed and more surprising, I added a loop when the users finish their first round. It makes the story much spookier, as if this is a haunted forest that one can never leave.

Description

For this project, I created a soundscape that described the life of a blind girl to the audience. I drew three maps of the rooms in her house by myself. The three maps showed to the audience is actually three buttons. Therefore, the audience can choose which space they would like to explore first on their own. After the audience clicks the button and goes into that specific space, they will be shown a bigger map so that they will feel like they are really in that room. And in each room, I inserted at least 3 sound clips on different objects for the audience to trigger by themselves. In the following, I would like to explain the sound that I inserted, my central idea, and the future development that I can have based on the suggestions given by my classmates and professors.

A unique sound experience in a city after destruction

Description

*Notes: When viewing the webpage, click on “reset” a few times before you click on anything else*

First of all, this is a web-based soundscape.

This project was inspired by the rhythm game Cytus II, and the images came from this game as well. The story of the game happens in a future cyberpunk world where music is a common interest of all human. Node 8 is the name of a city in the game. My goal is to create a soundscape of someone (the user) visiting a house in the city ruins. The user can click on objects in the house to hear sounds and how the sounds interact with the environment. The overall experience should be poetic. However, by looking for an easter egg in the project, you might be able to understand the story behind.

All the sounds and background music are from Adobe sample pack or recorded by me. Another piece of music in the project is “Used to be” composed by KIVA. All of these sounds and music have been through postproduction. For the background music, I put together four ambient music pieces and several glitchy electronic sounds from Adobe sample pack. I also added filters on “Used to be” to make it sound a little distorted. As for the rest of the sounds, a little reverb would do the job.
