What are advertisements really trying to sell you? What does life look like without products?

http://www.phasesofsputnik.com/blog/what-absence-reveals/

Description

[        ] is a hand-bound book of advertisements with the products, copy, and taglines removed. What’s left is the set of ideals and narratives that advertisers wished to pose as the context for their products. Each page of the book allows odd windows to all of the pages behind it, creating a landscape of product contexts and idealized vistas.

Recurring Concepts in Art

VOID

JungHyun Moon

This piece is a new media installation, responding composed sound with my own narrative story. Colorful ink drips into water and expresses beautiful “natural” pattern. However, it will not last long and become dull. It will become transparent again by the decolorization of Ozone. This cycle repeats continuously.

http://moqn.net/blog/2014/02/06/void/

Description

This piece is about the cycles in our life.

Dripping ink into water draws abstract and spectacular colorful patterns in the water container, and it represents exciting and hilarious moments with progress and achievements in our life.

While mixed with other ink, the colors of ink will loose their own vivid colors and become dark gray, as most of honor, glory, happiness, and love in the world will fade away.

However, it will become transparent again by decolorizing with Ozone. This phase says the moment of overcoming emptiness with new motivation and stimulation.

This process will repeat constantly.

Generate poetry by banging out rhythms on drum pads.

Description

A Python script reads serial data from two sensors to as stressed or unstressed syllable, then searches the dictionary for words that conform to the established metrical pattern. For one lazy coin (cf Sam Lavigne) a real poet (me) will edit the computer generated output into a “real” poem, that show attendees can cherish forever.

DungeonScript

Jaewoong Hwang

A language for creating old-school first person dungeon crawler on web.

http://dungeonscript.herokuapp.com

Description

DungeonScript is an easy way to make your own html5 dungeon crawl game like Wizardry, or Heroine Dusk(http://heroinedusk.com/) for recent example.

Inspired by PuzzleScript(http://puzzlescript.net/) and Twelve(https://github.com/nasser/twelve/), key design concerns were to keep the language simple and easy, but to never confine possibilities of making various game mechanics. For this, DungeonScript adapted ECS, or entity component system, as its language philosophy. While there's a specific goal for the language allowing users to easily make things happen, a grammar itself looks very much like general-purpose language, giving users unlimited ability for designing their own rules of play.

Solar Powered Music Making Robots made from items headed for the trash found in the Sub-Basement of TISCH

http://www.inventioninbrooklyn.com/daftjunk/

Description

Sustainable design with electronics can often begin with a conversation about cost, what are my energy costs? How much energy was used to create my materials? How much does it cost in energy and resources to break down my waste? We began from a place of using things that were abundant and not being used on the floor: Trash and Solar Power from the giant panel on the roof of TISCH.

From there we created Daft Junk two solar powered robots, made from trash, who make music powered by the sun. Our audience can control the robots using a control box that simulates distribution of power to each of the robot's component parts. We want to introduce the audience to the idea of a power budget, demonstrating how much can be done even while adhering to strict constraints, but in a fun and playful way.

Genetic flower

Haylee Hongeun Jung

Genetic flowers is a a alternative design interface allows a user to design a different bouquet or flower monogram based on their preference.

http://hayleejung.com/sk/?portfolio=genetic-flower-work-in-progress

Description

The concept is influenced by Genetic Algorithm which is to look for the best result by mimicking natural evolution process. The system leaves dominant genes to next generation and creates offspring based on the genes. This alternative interface generates beautiful flowers by being hereditary and causing genetic variations.

"Emergence Unfolding"

Edward Button

A site specific parametric sculpture shaped from sound and grown algorythmicly

http://itp.nyu.edu/~etb273/wordpress/2014/05/video-documentation/

Description

Through research, I created a comprehensive framework for site specific parametric sculpture. The framework uses parametric design and location narrative to create formal possibilities within a family of possible outcomes. This process framework was used to design a parametric sculpture for fabrication and installation in the atrium of 644 Putnam Avenue, a commercial office real estate development in Greenwich Connecticut. The design uses procedural growth algorithms and parametricly designed shapes drawn from audio spectrographs as if it had been grown from the location narrative. Fabricated utilizing Transitional Light Film, the sculpture interacts with the sun and architectural lighting to create an ever changing form and reflection. For display “Emergence Unfolding” takes the form of a model and 3d rendurings built in Unity.

Borges "The Library of Babel" adapted to Oculus Rift, with some critical seasoning along the way.

http://dont.have.yet

Description

3D animation for Oculus Rift of “The Library of Babel” using Three.js and WebGL. Like stereoscopes of the past, and in some ways, books, the Oculus Rift may provide a private narrative experience of the “real”, enhanced with the “feel” of 3D. I chose this Borges story because it describes an unreal landscape, and as such, provides fertile ground for me to challenge ideas of the “right” kind of content for “realifying” technologies.

New Circuits for Dancing with Light

Justin Lange

Gloves as a luminous dance instrument that are not simply pretty, but expressive

Description

LEDs wands, poi, hoops and other “light-up” instruments and toys constitute a desired aesthetic in EDM culture, but as tools for individual movement-based expression, they are no more expressive than a flashlight. Most LED devices have only two states (“on” or “off”), or offer preprogramed sequences. Several state-of-the art POV (“persistence of vision”) devices allow custom images to be uploaded, but none allow immediate control over LEDs' expressive potential, such as luminance or hue. To encourage light dancing that is not simply pretty but also expressive, I created a new hand-held kinetic instrument — a pair of gloves — with onboard sensors and controls that allow dancers to spontaneously generate and display novel light patterns while dancing.
